“THE KINGDOM OF GOD AND THE CHURCH”
Genesis 1:26 . . . Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; LET THEM HAVE DOMINION over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” (fish, birds, beasts, planet, and the bugs)
Mark 2:21–22 . . . No one sews a piece of unshrunk cloth on an old garment; or else the new piece pulls away from the old, and the tear is made worse. 22 And no one puts new wine into old wineskins; or else the new wine bursts the wineskins, the wine is spilled, and the wineskins are ruined. But new wine must be put into new wineskins.”
Daniel 7:27 . . . Then the kingdom and dominion, and the greatness of the kingdoms under the whole heaven, shall be given to the people, the saints of the Most High. His kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and all dominions shall serve and obey Him.’
Revelation 5:9–10 . . . And they sang a new song, saying: “You are worthy to take the scroll, and to open its seals; for You were slain, and have redeemed us to God by Your blood out of every tribe and tongue and people and nation, 10 and have made us kings and priests to our God; and we shall reign on the earth.”
I. What is the church’s relationship to the Kingdom?
• The church and the Kingdom are not the same thing
Luke 17:20–21 . . . Now when He was asked by the Pharisees when the kingdom [church] of God would come, He answered them and said, “The kingdom [church] of God does not come with observation; 21 nor will they say, ‘See here!’ or ‘See there!’ For indeed, the kingdom [church] of God is within you.”
Matthew 25:34 . . . Then the King will say to those on His right hand, ‘Come, you blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom [church] prepared for you from the foundation of the world:
• The Kingdom is larger than the Church – all of the church is in the Kingdom, but all of the Kingdom is not in the church.
Matthew 21:43 . . . “Therefore I say to you, the kingdom of God will be taken from you and given to a nation bearing the fruits of it.
• The church is the vehicle of the Kingdom, not the destination – it delivers the Kingdom to the world.
Matthew 16:19 . . . And I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.”
II. What is Jesus’ relationship to the Church?
Matthew 16:13–17 . . . When Jesus came into the region of Caesarea Philippi, He asked His disciples, saying, “Who do men say that I, the Son of Man, am?” 14 So they said, “Some say John the Baptist, some Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.” 15 He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” 16 Simon Peter answered and said, “You are “THE CHRIST,” the Son of the living God.”
➢ You are the Christ: Christos – The anointed King.
John 12:15 . . . “Fear not, daughter of Zion; Behold, your King is coming, Sitting on a donkey’s colt.”
Luke 23:2 . . . and they began to accuse Him, saying, “We found this fellow perverting the nation, and forbidding to pay taxes to Caesar, saying that He Himself is Christ, a King.”
John 18:37 . . . Pilate therefore said to Him, “Are You a king then?” Jesus answered, “You say rightly that I am a king. For this cause I was born, and for this cause I have come into the world, that I should bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth hears My voice.”
Colossians 1:18 . . . He is the head of the body, the church, who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in all things He may have the preeminence.
III. What is the relationship of the Church to the King?
Matthew 16:17-18 . . . Jesus answered and said to him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar- Jonah, for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but My Father who is in heaven. 18 And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build “MY CHURCH,” and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it.
• The Church is the governing body of the Kingdom
➢ My Church: mou ecclesia; literally – My assembly or My called-out ones.
Daniel 2:44 . . . And in the days of these kings the God of heaven will set up a kingdom which shall never be destroyed; and the kingdom shall not be left to other people; “it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms,” and it shall stand forever.
Matthew 28:18–20 . . . And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen.
