Need to Know: A Series from 1 John
Truth and Lies
1 John 2:18-28

Main Idea
God provides everything you need to remain faithful to Jesus.

1.He Offers Perspective

“Children, it is the last hour, and as you have heard that antichrist is coming, so now many antichrists have come. Therefore we know that it is the last hour. They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would have continued with us. But they went out, that it might become plain that they all are not of us.”
1 John 2:18-19

“ So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. Whoever feeds on my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day. For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink. When many of his disciples heard it, they said, “This is a hard saying; who can listen to it?” After this many of his disciples turned back and no longer walked with him. So Jesus said to the twelve, “Do you want to go away as well?”
John 6:53-55, 60, 66-67

2. He Tells the Truth and Exposes the Lies

a. He tells the truth

“But you have been anointed by the Holy One, and you all have knowledge. I write to you, not because you do not know the truth, but because you know it, and because no lie is of the truth.”
1 John 2: 20-21

“The brothers immediately sent Paul and Silas away by night to Berea, and when they arrived they went into the Jewish synagogue. Now these Jews were more noble than those in Thessalonica; they received the word with all eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily to see if these things were so. Many of them therefore believed...”
Acts 17:10-12

b. He exposes the lies

“Who is the liar but he who denies that Jesus is the Christ? This is the antichrist, he who denies the Father and the Son. No one who denies the Son has the Father. Whoever confesses the Son has the Father also.”
1 John 2:22-23

“Satan’s chief stratagem during this age is to plant the counterfeit wherever Christ plants the true.”
Warren Wiersbe

c. We abide in the truth (26-27)

“I write these things to you about those who are trying to deceive you. But the anointing that you received from him abides in you, and you have no need that anyone should teach you. But as his anointing teaches you about everything, and is true, and is no lie—just as it has taught you, abide in him.”
1 John 2:26-27

We have the Holy Spirit
He is the Helper (John 14:16),
The Teacher (14:26)
The Power of God(Luke 4:14, Romans 15:13,19)
The one who makes us bold (Acts)
Our Seal and Guarantee of the promised salvation (1 Cor. 1:22; 5:5)
Our Truth (John 14:17)

3. He Gives Confidence to Endure

“Let what you heard from the beginning abide in you. If what you heard from the beginning abides in you, then you too will abide in the Son and in the Father. And this is the promise that he made to us—eternal life. And now, little children, abide in him, so that when he appears we may have confidence and not shrink from him in shame at his coming”.
1 John 2:24-25,28

“Since it was the truth that was revealed to them at first, there was no need of a later revelation to correct the mistakes of the first.”
Charles Spurgeon

“I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit and so prove to be my disciples.”
John 15:5, 7-8

“Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God”.
Hebrews 12:1-2

“For this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison.”
1 Corinthians 4:17
