Embracing the Holy Spirit
I. Drawing from God’s Spirit within Us
A. We are One Spirit with the Lord
1 Corinthians 6:17 (NKJV)But he who is joined to the Lord is one spirit
PRINCIPLE 1: The New Birth Joins Us to the Spirit of God through a Life-Giving Relationship.
B. The Holy Spirit Illuminates and Quickens Scripture
1 Corinthians 2:9-10 (TPT)9 This is why the Scriptures say: Things never discovered or heard of before, things beyond our ability to imagine these are the many things God has in store for all his lovers. 10 But God now unveils these profound realities to us by the Spirit. Yes, he has revealed to us his inmost heart and deepest mysteries through the Holy Spirit, who constantly explores all things.
PRINCIPLE 2: It’s Important for Every Christian to Understand, Respond and Cooperate with the Holy Spirit, so We don’t Limit Our Spiritual Life.
II. The Present-Day Ministry of the Holy Spirit
Define: Embrace - to Accept Willingly and Support Enthusiastically.
A. Embracing the Holy Spirit
Acts 2:17 (NKJV)‘Andit shall come to pass in the last days, says God,; Your sons and your daughters shall prophesy,Your young men shall see visions,Your old men shall dream dreams.
PRINCIPLE 3: The Holy Spirit is More than something to Experience; He is the One who Jesus said would Come Alongside to Comfort, Help and Empower Us.
B. Resisting the Holy Spirit
Acts 7:51 (NLT) “You stubborn people! You are heathen at heart and deaf to the truth. Must you forever resist the Holy Spirit?That’s what your ancestors did, and so do you!
PRINCIPLE 4:The Ministry of the Holy Spirit, including Spiritual Gifts and Manifestations, has not Passed Away and is Still Essential to Our Spiritual Life.
III. The Life of Jesus
A. Jesus Began His Public Ministry Empowered by the Holy Spirit
Matthew 3:16–17 (NKJV)16 When He had been baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened to Him, and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting upon Him. 17 And suddenly a voice
PRINCIPLE 5: Jesus Waited for the Holy Spirit Baptism to Start His Ministry.
B. Jesus did not Operate Independent of the Holy Spirit
John 8:28–29 (NLT) 28 So Jesus said… “I do nothing on my own but say only what the Father taught me.29 Andthe onewho sent me is with me—he has not deserted me. For I always do what pleases him.”
PRINCIPLE 6: Jesus Depended on the Father to Empower Him with the Spirit and did not Operate Independent of Him; His Public Ministry began with being Endowed with the Power of the Holy Spirit.
C. God’s Supernatural Power Validated Jesus’ Ministry
Mark 2:8–12 (NKJV)8 But immediately, when Jesus perceived in His spirit that they reasoned thus within themselves, He said to them, “Why do you reason about these things in your hearts? 9 Which is easier, to say to the paralytic, ‘Your sins are forgiven you,’ or to say, ‘Arise, take up your bed and walk’? 10 But that you may know that the Son of Man has power on earthto forgive sins”—He said to the paralytic, 11 “I say to you, arise, take up your bed, and go to your house.”12 Immediately he arose, took up the bed, and went out in the presence of them all, so that all were amazed and glorified God, saying, “We never saw
IV. The Promise of the Father
Acts 1:4–5 (NKJV)4 And being assembled together with them,He commanded them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the Promise of the Father, “which,”He said,“you haveheard from Me; 5 for John truly baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.”
PRINCIPLE 7: As a Church, it’s Important to Embrace the Promise of the Father, the Holy Spirit!
A. Being Filled with the Holy Spirit
Acts 4:29–31 (NLT)29 And now, O Lord, hear their threats, and give us, your servants, great boldness in preaching your word. 30 Stretch out your hand with healing power; may miraculous signs and wonders be done through the name of your holy servant Jesus.” 31 After this prayer, the meeting place shook, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit. Then they preached the word of God with boldness.
B. Empowered by the Holy Spirit
PRINCIPLE 8: The Holy Spirit Empowers the Church to Fulfill the Great Commission.
Acts 1:8 (NKJV) But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”
C. The Holy Spirit’s Presence and Power Validate the Word
PRINCIPLE 9: God Confirms His Word through the Demonstration of Signs, Wonders, Miracles and Gifts of the Holy Spirit working in Our Lives!
Hebrews 2:1–4 (NLT) God confirmed the message by giving signs and wonders and various miracles and gifts of the Holy Spirit whenever he chose.
D. The Holy Spirit’s Presence and Power Validate the Church
Mark 16:17–18 (NKJV)17 And these signs will follow those who believe: In My name they will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues; 18 they will take up serpents; and if they drink anything deadly, it will by no means hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover.”
