Faith, Hope, Love:
True Faith

1 Corinthians 13:1-3
If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. And if I have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. If I give away all I have, and if I deliver up my body to be burned, but have not love, I gain nothing.

1 Corinthians 13:8, 13
“As for prophecies, they will pass away; as for tongues, they will cease; as for knowledge, it will pass away . . . So now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love.”

“There is no love without hope, not hope without love, and neither hope nor love without faith.”

True faith rests solely in Jesus Christ and his redeeming work.

What is true faith?

Faith unites to Jesus Christ. Faith is the way in which Jesus Christ becomes ours and it is the bond by which we become Christ’s.

Have Faith in Jesus Christ

True Faith can only be faith that rests in Jesus Christ.

Have Faith in the Past Work of Jesus

Charles Spurgeon talked about a process of faith:

Knowledge -> Belief -> Trust

We cannot believe what we do not know; we cannot trust what we do not believe.

Have Faith in the Present Work of Jesus

J. C. Ryle
“Christ lives, and therefore our faith will not fail.”

Romans 8:31-35
“What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things? Who shall bring any charge against God’s elect? It is God who justifies. Who is to condemn? Christ Jesus is the one who died—more than that, who was raised—who is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us. Who shall separate us from the love of Christ?”

Have Faith in the Future Work of Jesus

Jesus is not finished working. There is still yet to come the great hope of the Christian, the Second Coming of Jesus.

When Jesus returns, believers will finally experience the full salvation that God has promised.
