John begins this message to his people with these words.
John shares his eyewitness experiences of a resurrected Jesus so that you can find in Jesus what he found in Jesus.
John in his letter puts forward 8 marks of a Christian. These are the things that we are called to do, it is who we are called to be, and it is how we are to be identified.
Christians walk in the light. We walk in the light because Jesus is in the light.
We stay in the darkness for three reasons. One we don’t know there is light. Two we are ashamed of our sins. Three we don’t want others to see what we are doing.
The world does not see sin as sin.
This is not only an acknowledgment of the sins of others but also an ownership of our own sin.
Instead of hiding our sin, we confess it. We own it, acknowledge it and God forgives it. You cannot receive from God what you do not ask from him.
3. Jesus is our Savior and the Savior of the World
Christians recognize that we have our standing with God not because of who we are but because of who Jesus is.
This is not just for us, it is for all people. This hope is meant to be distributed.
This gives us great insight into the life of a believer. It should be evident to everyone.
A Christian reads God's word to determine what God calls them to do and then sets about with the help of the Holy Spirit to do the very thing that God calls them to do.
The preeminent characteristic of Christians is to be love.
Your level of love for others indicates your level of commitment to Christ.
This is not a Jesus and…proposition.
What are you holding onto instead of doing the thing that God called you to?
This is where our love for the world interferes with our love for the people in the world.
Another word for this is abide. We rest in him, we commune with him. This is more than a Thursday, Sunday checklist. This is a way of life.
