Peter learned that with God there is no respecter of persons.
This is a truth that Paul emphasizes again and again.
The great characteristic of God is His fairness, His justice, and His complete impartiality.
It is James’s concern that snobbery may invade the Church.

A snob—one who seeks associations with persons of higher social position than himself and looks down on those he considers inferior.

The church must be a place where all distinctions are removed.
The Gospel offered so much to the poor and demanded so much from the rich that it was the poor who were swept into the Church.

Common people heard Jesus gladly.
The name James mentions may be “Christian,” which unbelievers first called followers of Christ at Antioch. It was originally a nickname, used in jest.

The word “called” is interesting. It is the word that is used for a wife taking her husband’s name in marriage.
James calls the great command to love our neighbors as ourselves the royal law.
The Jews regarded the law as a series of detached commands.

The whole law is the will of God; to break any part of it is to infringe the will of God and be guilty of sin.
The Christian must always remember: only he who shows mercy will find mercy.
Faith is proved by its works.

Was James contradicting Paul’s doctrine of justification by faith?

Both believe in works of godliness.
Paul has in mind the root of salvation; James has in mind the fruit of salvation.

Paul is condemning dead works; James is condemning dead faith.

Faith as a practical principle
“Can faith save him?”

—the kind of faith that is nothing more than mental, intellectual acceptance

Christ’s own words say, “By their fruits ye shall know them.”

True works are evidence to all of true faith.

Only from true faith can true works spring.

A lack of works is sure proof of a lack of faith.

Faith justifying by works

What he really means is justified by a working faith.

No man will ever be moved to action without faith. No man’s faith is real until it moves him to action.
