Text: Galatians 4:1-7

In Galatians 4:1-7, Paul declares that those who have faith in Christ are children of God, heirs of all God’s promises.

1) What is one thing you took away from this past Sunday’s sermon? What’s one question you have?

2) Read Galatians 4:4-5. Paul says that humans enter God’s family through adoption. How does Paul’s adoption language help us understand God’s love for us?

3) Think about a time you’ve found yourself in a relationship where love or approval was conditional. Now think about a relationship where love and approval was freely given. How would you describe the differences between these two kinds of relationships?

4) Can you think of moments throughout the week when you’ve felt that God was disappointed in you? How did that feeling impact the way you interacted with others? Your coworkers? Friends? Family members?

5) How does knowing that you are a beloved son or daughter of God affect the way you view yourself? The way you treat those around you?

6) PRAY that God would help your group would understand the benefits of adoption into his family and live in light of them.

>> We are slaves in need of adoption.
“Believers, whether male or female, attain the status reserved in the ancient world for one specially chosen ‘son.’” —Douglas Moo, Galatians
>> We are slaves in need of adoption.
>> We are children in need of belonging.

“If you want to judge how well a person understands Christianity, find out how much he makes of the thought of being God’s child, and having God as his Father. If this is not the thought that prompts and controls his worship and prayers and his whole outlook on life, it means that he does not understand Christianity very well at all.” - J.I. Packer, Knowing God

>> We are children in need of belonging.
>> We are sons and daughters in need of a brother.

You will lose your baby teeth.
At times, you'll lose your faith in me.
You will lose a lot of things,
But you cannot lose my love.
You may lose your appetite,
Your guiding sense of wrong and right.
You may lose your will to fight,
But you cannot lose my love.
You will lose your confidence.
In times of trial, your common sense.
You may lose your innocence,
But you cannot lose my love.
Many things can be misplaced;
Your very memories be erased.
No matter what the time or space,
You cannot lose my love.
