Intro: The Gifts
A. 1 Corinthians 12:7-11, 27-28 – 7 A spiritual gift is given to each of us so we can help each other. 8 To one person the Spirit gives the ability to give wise advice; to another the same Spirit gives a message of special knowledge. 9 The same Spirit gives great faith to another, and to someone else the one Spirit gives the gift of healing. 10 He gives one person the power to perform miracles, and another the ability to prophesy. He gives someone else the ability to discern whether a message is from the Spirit of God or from another spirit. Still another person is given the ability to speak in unknown languages, while another is given the ability to interpret what is being said. 11 It is the one and only Spirit who distributes all these gifts. He alone decides which gift each person should have. 27 All of you together are Christ’s body, and each of you is a part of it. 28 Here are some of the parts God has appointed for the church: first are apostles, second are prophets, third are teachers, then those who do miracles, those who have the gift of healing, those who can help others, those who have the gift of leadership, those who speak in unknown languages.
B. The body is made up of different members with different gifts
C. Your gift is for others, not you
D. God gave you a gift because He believes in you
E. Romans 12:6-8 – In his grace, God has given us different gifts for doing certain things well. So if God has given you the ability to prophesy, speak out with as much faith as God has given you. 7 If your gift is serving others, serve them well. If you are a teacher, teach well. 8 If your gift is to encourage others, be encouraging. If it is giving, give generously. If God has given you leadership ability, take the responsibility seriously. And if you have a gift for showing kindness to others, do it gladly.
1. Reach (Go), Feet
A. Romans 10:14-15 – But how can they call on him to save them unless they believe in him? And how can they believe in him if they have never heard about him? And how can they hear about him unless someone tells them? 15 And how will anyone go and tell them without being sent? That is why the Scriptures say, “How beautiful are the feet of messengers who bring good news!” It’s so basic, how can you believe if you haven’t heard and how can you hear if no one goes
B. You carry His sacred Word in you!
C. You carry freedom, hope, forgiveness, life
D. What good does it do if no one goes?
2. Teach, Mouth/Voice
A. 2 Timothy 4:2-5 – Preach the word of God. Be prepared, whether the time is favorable or not. Patiently correct, rebuke, and encourage your people with good teaching. 3 For a time is coming when people will no longer listen to sound and wholesome teaching. They will follow their own desires and will look for teachers who will tell them whatever their itching ears want to hear. 4 They will reject the truth and chase after myths. 5 But you should keep a clear mind in every situation. Don’t be afraid of suffering for the Lord. Work at telling others the Good News, and fully carry out the ministry God has given you.
B. We need to clarify & defend the Word so others grow
C. Jesus spent time investing in the disciples
D. We must teach people to be disciples, searchers of truth
E. Tell people the good news, God needs a voice.
3. Encourage, Arms
A. Hebrews 10:24-25 – Let us think of ways to motivate one another to acts of love and good works. 25 And let us not neglect our meeting together, as some people do, but encourage one another, especially now that the day of his return is drawing near.
B. One of the main reasons for church is to encourage others
C. Someone needs your encouragement, the gifts are for others
D. We need each other more than ever before
E. Church is a “time-out”, in the great battle
F. There is something different about our church
G. Simple, it's that all people have value, it's love & acceptance
H. Someone must be God’s arms?
4. Love, Heart
A. 1 Corinthians 12:31, 13:1-3 – So you should earnestly desire the most helpful gifts. But now let me show you a way of life that is best of all. 1If I could speak all the languages of earth and of angels, but didn’t love others, I would only be a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. 2 If I had the gift of prophecy, and if I understood all of God’s secret plans and possessed all knowledge, and if I had such faith that I could move mountains, but didn’t love others, I would be nothing. 3 If I gave everything I have to the poor and even sacrificed my body, I could boast about it; but if I didn’t love others, I would have gained nothing.
B. Chapter 14 says “Let love be your highest goal”
C. Love is more important than any of the spiritual gifts
D. We need to be loving people (all people)
E. We make it so complicated, but we need to just love people
F. Song – Danny Gokey – “Love God & Love People"
G. Romans says, “It’s His love that leads us to repentance
H. Loving people is freeing, we don’t have to judge, just love
