Opening Questions and Prayer
- What do you think have been the biggest challenges in our culture and our churches over the past several months?
- Spend a few minutes and name a couple of words or phrases that capture what 2020 has been like for you personally.
- Pause for a few minutes to quiet your heart and mind. Pray over the words and phrases you’ve mentioned, and ask God to bring you peace and direction.
Bible Study and Group Discussion
Read Philippians 4:2-7
1. Why do you think Paul made such a public display of these women? Why was he so concerned about unity in the Philippian church (vs. 2)?
2. Why might it be significant that they each labored with Paul or that their names are in the Book of Life (vs. 3)?
3. Why do you think Paul specifies always (vs. 4)? How is it possible to rejoice and be full of joy when you’re in a disagreement with someone?
4. How does being grateful cultivate healthier relationships?
5. What do our hearts and minds need to be guarded from (vs. 7)?
6. What does it mean to live in Christ Jesus?
7. What does Paul tell us to do (and not do) in this passage? Make a list.
8. From this list, write down at least three action steps you can take.
9. What are characteristics of someone who is full of pride? How does thinking you know it all hinder or damage relationships?
10. What does it look like to live in harmony with others without compromising our convictions?
Soul Training
Experiencing peace and expressing love is essential in our relationship with God and others. Make a list of your worries and talk with God about them. Think of people you know and pray for them. Do these things several times this week, so they become a more regular part of your life.
Memory Verse
… What is important is faith expressing itself in love. Galatians 5:6b (NLT)
Prepare for Next Sunday
We begin a new series next Sunday, September 20, titled Church Empowered. To prepare, read Acts 1.
