1 Thessalonians 1:6-10
The Conversion of God's Elect
I. God’s Elect Have a Working Faith (2-3a)

1 Thessalonians 1:2-3a – We give thanks to God always for you all, making mention of you in our prayers, 3 remembering without ceasing your work of faith

II. God’s Elect have a Laboring Love (3b)

1 Thessalonians 1:3b – labor of love

III. God’s Elect have an Enduring Hope (3c)

1 Thessalonians 3:c – and patience of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ in the sight of our God and Father

IV. God’s Elect Receive the Gospel (4-5)

1 Thessalonians 3:4-5 – knowing, beloved brethren, your election by God. 5 For our gospel did not come to you in word only, but also in power, and in the Holy Spirit and in much assurance, as you know what kind of men we were among you for your sake.

A. You are chosen by God

1 Thessalonians 3:4 – knowing, beloved brethren, your election by God.

Ephesians 1:4-6 – just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before Him in love, 5 having predestined us to adoption as sons by Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the good pleasure of His will, 6 to the praise of the glory of His grace, by which He made us accepted in the Beloved.

B. You responded to the gospel

1 Thessalonians 3:5 – For our gospel did not come to you in word only, but also in power, and in the Holy Spirit and in much assurance, as you know what kind of men we were among you for your sake.

2 Thessalonians 2:13-14 – But we are bound to give thanks to God always for you, brethren beloved by the Lord, because God from the beginning chose you for salvation through sanctification by the Spirit and belief in the truth, 14 to which He called you by our gospel, for the obtaining of the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Acts 1:8 – But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”

Titus 3:5-6 – not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us, through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit, 6 whom He poured out on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Savior

Hebrews 10:19-25 – Therefore, brethren, having boldness to enter the Holiest by the blood of Jesus, 20 by a new and living way which He consecrated for us, through the veil, that is, His flesh, 21 and having a High Priest over the house of God, 22 let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. 23 Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful. 24 And let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works, 25 not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching.
V. God’s Elect Imitate Christ (6a)

1 Thessalonians 1:6a – And you became followers of us and of the Lord

1 Corinthians 11:1 – Imitate me, just as I also imitate Christ.

Our position effects our practice
Romans 6:3-4 – Or do you not know that as many of us as were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death? 4 Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.

This is the Overall Goal of God’s Plan of Salvation
Romans 8:29 – For whom He foreknew, He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son, that He might be the firstborn among many brethren.
VI. God’s Elect Endure Affliction with Joy (6b)

1 Thessalonians 1:6b – having received the word in much affliction, with joy of the Holy Spirit

Example of Paul and Silas in Philippi
Acts 16:20-25 – And they brought them to the magistrates, and said, “These men, being Jews, exceedingly trouble our city; 21 and they teach customs which are not lawful for us, being Romans, to receive or observe.” 22 Then the multitude rose up together against them; and the magistrates tore off their clothes and commanded them to be beaten with rods. 23 And when they had laid many stripes on them, they threw them into prison, commanding the jailer to keep them securely. 24 Having received such a charge, he put them into the inner prison and fastened their feet in the stocks. 25 But at midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the prisoners were listening to them.

Affliction (θλῖψις thlipsis) – tribulation, oppression, intense pressure

2 Timothy 3:12 – Yes, and all who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will suffer persecution.

Why we are able to endure with joy
2 Corinthians 4:16-18 – Therefore we do not lose heart. Even though our outward man is perishing, yet the inward man is being renewed day by day. 17 For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, is working for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory, 18 while we do not look at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen. For the things which are seen are temporary, but the things which are not seen are eternal.
VII. God’s Elect Exemplify the Christian Walk (7)

1 Thessalonians 1:7 – so that you became examples to all in Macedonia and Achaia who believe.

Example (τύπος tupos) – exact representation, copy

Paul’s Command to Timothy
1 Timothy 4:12 – Let no one despise your youth, but be an example to the believers in word, in conduct, in love, in spirit, in faith, in purity.

Paul’s command to young men
Titus 2:7 – in all things showing yourself to be a pattern of good works

1 John 2:6 – He who says he abides in Him ought himself also to walk just as He walked.
VIII. God’s Elect Proclaim the Word (8-9a)

1 Thessalonians 1:8-9a – For from you the word of the Lord has sounded forth, not only in Macedonia and Achaia, but also in every place. Your faith toward God has gone out, so that we do not need to say anything. 9 For they themselves declare concerning us what manner of entry we had to you

Sounded forth (ἐξηχέω exechetai) – ring out, blast out loudly like a blaring trumpet or rolling thunder

Psalm 147:15 – He sends out His command to the earth; His word runs very swiftly.

Isaiah 55:10-11 – “For as the rain comes down, and the snow from heaven, And do not return there, But water the earth, And make it bring forth and bud, That it may give seed to the sower And bread to the eater, 11 So shall My word be that goes forth from My mouth; It shall not return to Me void, But it shall accomplish what I please, And it shall prosper in the thing for which I sent it.
IX. God’s Elect Turn from Sin and Serve the Lord (9b)

1 Thessalonians 1:9b – and how you turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God

Turned (ἐπιστρέφω epistrepho) – turn around and go the opposite direction, conversion

Acts 26:17-18 – I will deliver you from the Jewish people, as well as from the Gentiles, to whom I now send you, 18 to open their eyes, in order to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan to God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins and an inheritance among those who are sanctified by faith in Me.’

Acts 9:1-6 – Then Saul, still breathing threats and murder against the disciples of the Lord, went to the high priest 2 and asked letters from him to the synagogues of Damascus, so that if he found any who were of the Way, whether men or women, he might bring them bound to Jerusalem. 3 As he journeyed he came near Damascus, and suddenly a light shone around him from heaven. 4 Then he fell to the ground, and heard a voice saying to him, “Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting Me?” 5 And he said, “Who are You, Lord?” Then the Lord said, “I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting. It is hard for you to kick against the goads.” 6 So he, trembling and astonished, said, “Lord, what do You want me to do?” Then the Lord said to him, “Arise and go into the city, and you will be told what you must do.”
X. God’s Elect Long for the Return of Christ (10)

1 Thessalonians 1:10 – and to wait for His Son from heaven, whom He raised from the dead, even Jesus who delivers us from the wrath to come.

2 Timothy 4:8 – Finally, there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give to me on that Day, and not to me only but also to all who have loved His appearing.

Titus 2:11-14 – For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men, 12 teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly in the present age, 13 looking for the blessed hope and glorious appearing of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ, 14 who gave Himself for us, that He might redeem us from every lawless deed and purify for Himself His own special people, zealous for good works.
