Why Does God Allow Suffering?
April 8, 2018
Ideas to consider on suffering…
No one is exempt from suffering.

“For he gives his sunlight to both the evil and the good, and he sends rain on the just and the unjust alike.” Matthew 5:45 (NLT)

“The Lord God placed the man in the Garden of Eden to tend and watch over it. 16 But the Lord God warned him, “You may freely eat the fruit of every tree in the garden—17 except the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. If you eat its fruit, you are sure to die.” Genesis 2:15-17 (NLT)
Suffering and Free Will: “A forced love is no love at all.”

“When souls become wicked they will certainly use this possibility to hurt one another, and this, perhaps, accounts for 4/5s of the sufferings of man.” C.S. Lewis (The Problem of Pain)
Ideas to consider when suffering…
We have a limited perspective.

“Just because you can’t see or imagine a good reason why God might allow something to happen doesn’t mean there can’t be one.” Timothy Keller

“My thoughts are nothing like your thoughts,” says the Lord. “And my ways are far beyond anything you could imagine. 9 For just as the heavens are higher than the earth, so my ways are higher than your ways and my thoughts higher than your thoughts.” Isaiah 55:8-9 (NLT)
Pain reminds us of our dependence.

“God whispers in our pleasures, speaks in our conscience, but shouts in our pain; it is His megaphone to rouse a deaf world.” C.S. Lewis

“You have made us for Yourself, O Lord, and our heart is restless until it rests in you.” Augustine Confessions Bk I. Par. 1

“Not that I was ever in need, for I have learned how to be content with whatever I have. 12 I know how to live on almost nothing or with everything. I have learned the secret of living in every situation, whether it is with a full stomach or empty, with plenty or little. 13 For I can do everything through Christ, who gives me strength.” Philippians 4:11-13 (NLT)
God never wastes a hurt.

“You intended to harm me, but God intended it all for good. He brought me to this position so I could save the lives of many people.” Genesis 50:20 (NLT)

“And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them.” Romans 8:28 (NLT)
We have a Savior who understands our pain.

“This High Priest of ours understands our weaknesses, for he faced all of the same testings we do, yet he did not sin.” Hebrews 4:15 (NLT)
