God’s Mercy and My Failures
Matthew 26:69-75 (pg. 596)
69 “Meanwhile, Peter was sitting outside in the courtyard. A servant girl came over and said to him, “You were one of those with Jesus the Galilean.” 70 But Peter denied it in front of everyone. “I don’t know what you’re talking about,” he said. 71 Later, out by the gate, another servant girl noticed him and said to those standing around, “This man was with Jesus of Nazareth.” 72 Again Peter denied it, this time with an oath. “I don’t even know the man,” he said. 73 A little later some of the other bystanders came over to Peter and said, “You must be one of them; we can tell by your Galilean accent.” 74 Peter swore, “A curse on me if I’m lying—I don’t know the man!” And immediately the rooster crowed. 75 Suddenly, Jesus’ words flashed through Peter’s mind: “Before the rooster crows, you will deny three times that you even know me.” And he went away, weeping bitterly.”

Matthew 26:69-75 (NLT)
We over estimate our strength.

“If you think, ‘I am strong! I can handle this. I’d never fall for that temptation,’ then be careful! For you could easily fall too!”

1 Corinthians 10:12 (NLT)
We fear what others will think.

“It is a dangerous trap to be concerned with what others think of you, but if you trust the Lord, you’ll be safe.”

Proverb 29:25 (NLT)
We speak without thinking.

“A little later some of the other bystanders came over to Peter and said, “You must be one of them; we can tell by your Galilean accent.” Peter swore, “A curse on me if I’m lying—I don’t know the man!” And immediately the rooster crowed.” Vv. 73-74 (NLT)

“In the same way, the tongue is a small thing that makes grand speeches. But a tiny spark can set a great forest on fire.6 And among all the parts of the body, the tongue is a flame of fire. It is a whole world of wickedness, corrupting your entire body. It can set your whole life on fire, for it is set on fire by hell itself.”

James 3:5-6 (NLT)
Grieve the failure.

“Suddenly, Jesus’ words flashed through Peter’s mind: “Before the rooster crows, you will deny three times that you even know me.” And he went away, weeping bitterly.” (v. 75)

“The sacrifice God wants is a broken and contrite spirit, God will not reject a humble and repentant heart.” Psalm 51:7
Get some support.

Mark 16:10 says “Mary Magdalene went and found the disciples together, grieving and weeping.”
Cast yourself on Christ’s Mercy

“All praise to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. It is by his great mercy that we have been born again, because God raised Jesus Christ from the dead.” 1 Peter 1:3 (NLT)
Jesus redeems our sin for the advancement of His purposes.

“When they entered the tomb, they saw a young man clothed in a white robe sitting on the right side. The women were shocked, 6 but the angel said, “Don’t be alarmed. You are looking for Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He isn’t here! He is risen from the dead! Look, this is where they laid his body. 7 Now go and tell his disciples, including Peter, that Jesus is going ahead of you to Galilee. You will see him there, just as he told you before he died.” Mark 16:6-7 (NLT)

“Lord, you know everything. You know that I love you.” Jesus said, “Then feed my sheep.” John 21:17 (NLT)
