BLURRED - Part 4 [May 7/8, 2016] Tim Haring

"To forgive is to set a prisoner free...and that prisoner is you!"
- Lewis Smedes
· To lift up, to bear, or to carry
[The word] means to carry, bear away or lift up the faults, sins and failures of others—to consider them guilty but forgiven!
- Holman Treasury of Key Bible Words[1]

· To release of a debt owed

· To extend grace

Both the sum (ten thousand) and the monetary unit (talent) are significant, for in the ancient Near East ten thousand was the highest number used in calculating, and the talent was the largest currency unit of that time. In other words, the amount is intended to stagger the imagination; it is the highest sum imaginable, to be contrasted with the trifling amount of the debt in verse 28.”[1] – B. M. Newman

10,000 talents would pay for something like 200,000 man-years of labour.[1] – John Nolland

· Forgiveness is not letting the guilty off the hook
· Forgiveness is not excusing unjust behavior
· Forgiveness is not reconciliation
· Forgiveness is not based on what is fair
· Forgiveness is not being a weak martyr
· Forgiveness is not stuffing your anger
· Forgiveness is not forgetting
· Forgiveness is not a feeling
Questions:
1. Can you think of an example where someone wronged you? Did you find it difficult to forgive that person? Why or why not?
2. Can you think of an example where you were the one who wronged someone else? If the other person forgave you, how did it make you feel? How did you feel if they didn’t forgive you?
3. Read Matthew 18:21-35. What do we learn about forgiveness from these verses? In what ways are we like the slave who owed so much? Why is it important that we forgive others?
4. Theologian Lewis Smedes wrote, “To forgive is to set a prisoner free…and that prisoner is you!” Do you agree with this statement? Explain your answer.
5. Read Ephesians 4:32. How is it possible for us to forgive other people as Christ has forgiven us? Do you think there are any sins that are unforgivable?
6. Do you think forgiveness means we have to maintain a relationship with the person who wronged us? Explain your answer. What’s the difference between forgiveness and reconciliation?
7. What resources do we have as believers in Christ to help us as to forgive others?
