Three areas we are going to talk about…
1. The mark of a disciple – Obedience 2:3
2. The life of a disciple – Love 2:7-8
3. The responsibility of a disciple – Awareness, living in truth 2:26
Characteristic #1: Obedience
“And we can be sure that we know him if we obey his commandments.”
– 1 John 2:3
Part of the difficulty is that we desire -- demand -- understanding of the why.

Loving God with all of our heart, soul, mind and our strength requires that we hear and obey.
Obedience first -- understanding later. #hard
His holy written word
Hebrews 4:12
“For the word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit, between joint and marrow. It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires.”
Inner peace
Philippians 4:7
“…his peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.”
Godly counsel
Proverbs 11:14
“….there is safety in having many advisers.”
Characteristic #2: Love
“Your love for one another will prove to the world that you are my disciples.”
– John 13:35
Resolve your differences with one another and let love rule.
2 Corinthians 13:11 ESV
“Finally, brothers, rejoice. Aim for restoration, comfort one another, agree with one another, live in peace; and the God of love and peace will be with you.”
Characteristic #3: Awareness -- living in the truth
It is of utmost importance that as disciples, we are able to discern false teaching that surfaces and leads people away from the truth of God’s word.
FALSE TEACHING: Prosperity Doctrine
Dick Brogden: “Teaching the prosperity gospel is a prime example of spiritual abuse. Prosperity doctrine is nothing more than a glorified Ponzi scheme that enriches the pastor at the top of the pyramid to the lack of the trusting giver at the bottom.”

And this always leads to hurt.
FALSE TEACHING: Hell does not exist
David Platt: “Hell is the manifestation that our sin against an infinitely holy God warrants infinitely eternal punishment. Moreover, when we minimize the reality of hell, we actually malign the mercy of God — because central to the fact of hell is that it is escapable. Jesus has endured the wrath of God on our behalf so that all who trust in him will be delivered from God's wrath and brought into fellowship with him forever.”
FALSE TEACHING: Salvation by works
The simple answer is that salvation by works seems right in the eyes of man. And this is what we learn from Proverbs 14:12 – “There is a path before each person that seems right, but it ends in death.”

“I preached first to those in Damascus, then in Jerusalem and throughout all Judea and also to the Gentiles, that all must repent of their sins and turn to God – and prove they have changed by the good things they do.”
Good works follow a repentant heart because we are compelled by our experience to share.
