As I read about the feeding of the 5,000, the verse that really stands out to me is verse 16. Jesus says, “YOU give them something to eat.” For some reason that verse always makes me laugh. The disciples (with their human eyes) point out to Jesus that it’s time to eat and there are WAY too many people there to feed, so people should go away and get something to eat. Sometimes even fast-growing churches can feel this way about their growing crowds. The people who’ve been at the church longer might even think, “Let’s send these new people away to make sure there is still room for us!”
Jesus is probably thinking, “Send them away?! Are you kidding me?” And he tells them, “YOU give them something to eat.” I’m sure the disciples thought, “Excuse me?? What can I do? There are thousands of people here, and I only have a few loaves of bread and two fish!”
Maybe you’re even feeling like that today as you’ve begun to think about how you can be a part of Harvest? It seems like such an enormous project! How could you even make a difference and an impact? The moral of this true story from Jesus’s life is that when we give what we have to God, He can multiply its impact! Will you trust today that when you give to God, no matter how big or small, He can multiply the impact of your giving?
