After the death of Moses, Joshua was chosen as the successor to Moses to lead the people into the Canaan – The Promised Land. Which he accomplished.
As Joshua neared the end of his life, he addressed the Israelites:
He calls upon the people to remember all that God has done
NEXT JOSHUA TURNS HIS ATTENTION TO THE FUTURE.

· He is not satisfied with the accomplishments of the past

· There are still portions, however, which have not been conquered.

· Despite Israel’s triumphs enemies remained in the Promised Land

In Judges we are told that the Israelites failed to conquer the land, they settled for merely occupying the land. Co-existing with their enemies.

· They committed a sin, not so much of commission as of omission.

· They failed to appropriate the promises of God for their time.
Point #1 - Don’t become complacent in your commitment

The Israelites had become complacent in their commission.

· They were satisfied to settle in the land, but not subdue it.

· To consume the provisions of the land rather than pursue the promises of God.

Point #2 – Change culture or culture will change you

The Israelites ceased to change the culture around them and as a consequence the culture changed them.

The period of time following the death of Joshua was some of the darkest years in Israel’s history. It is called the period of the Judges.
WHAT HAPPENED?

THE PEOPLE FORGOT GOD
Point #3: The Knowledge of God is the basis of Moral Truth

This text is a witness to the apparent failure of the community to keep alive its knowledge of God, the memory of God’s mighty works, or a knowledge of the law God gave Moses at Mount Sinai.

Who failed?

Religious leaders: The priests had failed in their instructional duties

Societal leaders: The leaders of the tribes failed to pass on the corporate memory of God’s promises and mighty deeds

Parents: Parents neglected to teach their children about God and His Law.
The new generation in Israel did not know the Lord, His law or what he had done for Israel.

· They had not developed a relationship with God.

· The effect of not knowing the Lord is expressed not in intellectual categories but in ethical ones: they did evil in the eyes of the Lord.

· Then the Israelites did evil in the eyes of the Lord and served the Baals (v.11)
The consequence of Israel’s sin was God handed them over to the nations that surrounded them; resulting in the reoccurring cyclical pattern of sin, punishment, crying out to God for help, God would send a deliver, the people would follow God for a season, then fall back into sin and the cycle started over. (2:16-23)

What was the power of these Canaanite religions that they were able to draw away God’s covenant people, who had experienced numerous blessings and miracles, to worship their gods?

Canaanite religions, especially the fertility cults had a strong appeal in two areas: Physical gratification and economic security or success (cult prostitution and the promise of fertility=prosperity)

The appeal of the non-believing world today is the same:
(1) Physical or sexual gratification;
(2) Commercial or material success.

· Both will compromise the faith and the commitment of a Christian man or woman

· Leading to their failure to fulfill the commission Christ gave us.
WE, LIKE THE GENERATION THAT FOLLOWED JOSHUA AND THE CONQUEST HAVE BECOME COMPLACENT

Instead of effecting change in the culture around us, we have been changed by the culture.

· It is easier to settle for the status-quo, then subdue the strongholds of our enemy.

· To be a COMMUNITY OF CONSUMERS, rather than an ARMY WHO IS PURSUING THE PROMISES OF GOD

We have been given the greatest message of all time, THE MESSAGE OF JESUS CHRIST

· We have received the POWER OF THE HOLY SPIRIT to accomplish the great commission.

IT IS TIME TO MOVE OUT OF OUR COMPLACENCY AND MOVE INTO OUR CALLING
