The consequence of Israel’s sin was God handed them over to the nations that surrounded them; resulting in the reoccurring cyclical pattern of sin, punishment, crying out to God for help, God would send a deliver, the people would follow God for a season, then fall back into sin and the cycle started over. (2:16-23)
What was the power of these Canaanite religions that they were able to draw away God’s covenant people, who had experienced numerous blessings and miracles, to worship their gods?
Canaanite religions, especially the fertility cults had a strong appeal in two areas: Physical gratification and economic security or success (cult prostitution and the promise of fertility=prosperity)
The appeal of the non-believing world today is the same:
(1) Physical or sexual gratification;
(2) Commercial or material success.
· Both will compromise the faith and the commitment of a Christian man or woman
· Leading to their failure to fulfill the commission Christ gave us.
