The Influence of Our Words

If all of the words we spoke in a single day were put into print, the result would fill a 50-page book.

In a year’s time, an average person's words would fill 132 books of 200 pages each. That is a lot of words. That is a lot of opportunity to encourage, to instruct, or to hurt, to cause pain, or to diminish.

It is our choice how we fill our book of influence.
One of the first things we see is that our words have influence.

Loose lips sink ships. Loose lips sink families. Loose lips sink reputations. Loose lips can even sink businesses.

The book of Proverbs is a great book to study on the influence of our words. In fact, Proverbs refers to our tongue, our mouth, or our lips over 150 times in just 31 chapters! Words are very important. Genesis chapter one reminds us that the entire existence of the universe came about simply because “God said.”

Words either launch life or deliver death. Our words have great influence on others.
You must guard your mouth to protect your life—so it does not fall into ruin.

Words give tremendous insight into the heart of a person. What we speak doesn't start with our lips. We don't just say stuff. It always comes from our heart.

Our heart is the source of our convictions, aspirations, dreams, values, hopes, cynicism, doubt, and any other emotion we experience.

1. See the gravity and weight of our hurtful and harmful words.
2. Learn how our lips were intended to be used; see the blessing that comes from honoring God and one
another with our words.
3. Learn how we can respond to our inappropriate words, both in our past and in our future.

The speech of a scoundrel is like a scorching fire, but the mouth of the righteous is like a fountain of life.

Have you ever met that person? Do you know someone who speaks to you and their words bring you life? When they speak, you don't get a sense of dread, pain, or dissension. You are actually inspired to obey Jesus more.

Helpful words are honest words. Have you ever stopped to examine how much you lie, even in little things, embellishments?

The goal is not to sit here and think about how awful you are, but rather to cling to grace. In the same way that your lips have been used to tear others down, they can be used to build them up. That is the greatness of the Gospel. It is the story of not just a cross, but also a resurrection.

You do not have to live in regret. By the power of God, you can bring reconciliation. It is never too late to share a good word,
to ask forgiveness, to guard your words in the future, or to repent.

If we are going to be believers that walk in maturity, we must deal with our past, humble ourselves before God, and ask for his help to guard our words by his Holy Spirit.

Let the scripture saturate your heart. The word of God will start to change not only your heart, but also what comes out of your mouth. The man or woman that loves the word of God is changed by the word of God and brings about all the fruit of that word.
