Elijah - Part 3, Praying with Power
Prayer is something we all seem to have a hard time developing in our life. We live with a sense that our prayer life isn’t adequate to bring us closer to God and help us grow stronger. Elijah is an example of a person who had a powerful prayer life. This Sunday’s message will explore Elijah’s life of prayer and what we can learn and apply in our lives from his example. Join us Sunday for our study of the life of Elijah. See you in church!

Introduction:

James 5:17
“Elijah was a human being, even as we are. He prayed earnestly that it would not rain, and it did not rain on the land for three and a half years.” (NIV)

I Kings 18:40-44
“Then Elijah commanded them, ‘Seize the prophets of Baal. Don’t let anyone get away!’ They seized them, and Elijah had them brought down to the Kishon Valley and slaughtered there.41 And Elijah said to Ahab, ‘Go, eat and drink, for there is the sound of a heavy rain.’ 42 So Ahab went off to eat and drink, but Elijah climbed to the top of Carmel, bent down to the ground and put his face between his knees. 43 ‘Go and look toward the sea,’ he told his servant. And he went up and looked. ‘There is nothing there,’ he said. Seven times Elijah said, ‘Go back.’44 The seventh time the servant reported, ‘A cloud as small as a man’s hand is rising from the sea.’ So Elijah said, ‘Go and tell Ahab, ‘Hitch up your chariot and go down before the rain stops you.’ ”(NIV)

1. Effective Prayer is Humble:

Proverbs 3:34
“He mocks proud mockers but shows favor to the humble and oppressed.” (NIV)

1 Peter 5:5
“…All of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because,
‘God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble’.” (NIV)

2. Effective Prayers are Specific Prayers

1 Kings 18:43
“ ’Go and look toward the sea’, he told his servant. And he went up and looked. ‘There is nothing there’, he said. Seven times Elijah said, ‘Go back.’ ”

3. Effective Prayers are Persistent Prayers

Colossians 4:2
“Continue steadfastly in prayer, being watchful in it with thanksgiving.” (NIV)

Luke 18:1-8
“Then Jesus told his disciples a parable to show them that they should always pray and not give up. He said: ‘In a certain town there was a judge who neither feared God nor cared what people thought. And there was a widow in that town who kept coming to him with the plea, ‘Grant me justice against my adversary.’ For some time he refused. But finally he said to himself, ‘Even though I don’t fear God or care what people think, yet because this widow keeps bothering me, I will see that she gets justice, so that she won’t eventually come and attack me!’ And the Lord said, ‘Listen to what the unjust judge says. And will not God bring about justice for his chosen ones, who cry out to him day and night? Will he keep putting them off? I tell you, he will see that they get justice, and quickly. However, when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on the earth?’ ”(NIV)

4. Effective Prayers are Expectant Prayers

I Kings 18:44
“The seventh time the servant reported, ‘A cloud as small as a man’s hand is rising from the sea.’ So Elijah said, ‘Go and tell Ahab, ‘Hitch up your chariot and go down before the rain stops you.’ ”(NIV)
