Flesh or Faith? (James 5:7-11)
I. Follow the Instruction of Those Before Us.
(To Not Take Matters into Our Own Hands)
Romans 12: 17-19 . . . ‘Repay no evil for evil. Have regard for good things in sight of all men. If it is possible, as much as depends on you, live peaceably with all men. Beloved do avenge yourselves, but rather give place to wrath; for it is written, “Vengeance in Mine; I will repay,” says the Lord.
Hebrews 13:9 . . . Do not be carried about with various and strange doctrines. For it is good that the heart be established by grace, not with foods which have not profited those who have been occupied with them.
Colossians 2 6-8 . . . As therefore have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him, rooted and built up in Him and established in the faith, as you have been taught, abounding in it with thanksgiving. Beware lest anyone cheat you through philosophy and empty deceit, according to the tradition of men, according to the basic principles of the world, and not according to Christ.
James 1:19-21 . . . So then, my beloved, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath; for the wrath of man does not produce the righteousness of God. Therefore, lay aside all filthiness and overflow of wickedness, and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls.
Philippians 2:14-16 . . . Do all things without complaining and disputing, that you may be blameless and harmless, children of God without fault in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world, holding fast the word of life, so that I may rejoice in the day of Christ that I have not run in or labored in vain.
Romans 14:11-13 . . . For it is written: “As I live, says the Lord, every knee shall bow to Me, and every tongue shall confess to God.” So then each of us shall give account of himself to God. Therefore let us not judge one another anymore, but rather resolve this, not to put stumbling block or a cause to fall in our brother’s way.
II. Follow the Examples of Those Before Us.
(Trusting the Master with All their Heart)
2 Peter 3:8-9 . . . Beloved, do not forget this one thing, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that nay should perish but that all should come to repentance.
