The MEN involved (Acts 12:25-13:1)

Barnabas and Saul return to Antioch from Jerusalem where they had delivered the collection from the believers in Antioch for the hurting believers in Judea due to the famine (Acts 11:29-30) along with a young man named John, who was also called Mark

John Mark

Mark was the cousin of Barnabas (Colossians 4:10)

Mark would later accompany Barnabas and Saul on their first missionary journey (Acts 13:5)

On that first journey, Mark would defect (Acts 13:13), ultimately causing a rift between Barnabas and Saul (Acts 15:36-40)
Along with Barnabas and Saul, other spiritual leaders were ministering in Antioch including:

Simeon, called Niger

Niger means black indicating that he was likely dark skinned

Some associate him with Simon o Cyrene who carried Jesus cross (Mark 15:21) but there is no direct evidence for that

Lucius of Cyrene (there is nothing to link him with the Lucius that Paul greets in Romans 16:21)

Manaen who had been brought up with Herod the Tetrarch (speaking of Herod Antipas)

“Brought up with” = “foster-brother

Perhaps he had been reared in Herod the Great’s household along with Herod Antipas

Spiritual Leadership: The church at Antioch was about to make a huge step in advancing the Gospel, but to be a church that would do so required strong spiritual leadership (Titus 1:3)
The MINISTRY involved (13:2-3)

The ROLE of spiritual leadership in the church (v2)

The responsibility of spiritual shepherds is spiritual ministry

The leaders at Antioch emulated the leadership of the Apostles who devoted themselves to prayer and to the ministry of the Word (Acts 6:4)

They were ministering to the Lord

“Minister” = to discharge a public office

Same idea as Paul’s exhortation to Timothy to “fulfill his ministry” (2 Timothy 4:5)

They faithfully discharged the office God had called them to which was the teaching of the people

The fact that they are ministering to the Lord (not to the congregation) shows that God is the true audience for all spiritual ministry

They were fasting

Fasting was an act of self-denial in order to place one’s full focus on the Lord for direction

Fasting in Scripture is always coupled with prayer
The RESULT of spiritual leadership in the church (v3)

The Spirit of God leads the leaders at the church at Antioch to
set apart Barnabas and Saul for a specific ministry purpose

The leaders of the church confirmed this leading by laying their hands on Barnabas and Saul

Operation World begins as the leaders then “sent then away” (a better translation would be “let them go” or “released them”)

This would now begin the first missionary journey of Paul and the further fulfillment of Jesus’ command to be witnesses for Him in Jerusalem, Judea and Samaria, and the uttermost part of the world (Acts 1:8)
