1. Icebreaker: On a scale of 1 to 10 (1 = can’t find anything & 10 = you’re better than Google Maps), how directionally challenged are you? Share a time that you got lost and you had to figure out how to find the correct route.
2. What insight, principle, or observation from Sunday’s sermon/message did you find to be most helpful, eye opening, or troubling?
3. Read Genesis 12:10-20, 13:1-4. What do we learn about Abram when he failed to tell the truth about Sarai being his wife? How does this relate back to the Fall in Genesis 3 when Adam did not stand up for his wife, Eve, and protect her from the serpent?
4. In Scripture, Egypt tends to represent God’s people running to the security of this world [except for when God told Jacob (Gen. 46:2-3) and Joseph (Matt. 2:13) to go to Egypt]. As Christ-followers, why do we try to still figure out life on our own? What do you turn to for help when you are not turning to Jesus?
5. In Genesis 12:2-3, God promises Abram that he is going to make him the “father of many nations.” How could’ve Abram really messed up God’s plan for him when he lied about Sarai being his wife and let the Pharaoh take her? How can fear get in the way of God’s plans for your life?
6. In Genesis 12:17, how did God intervene to ensure that His promise for Abram would not fail? What does that teach us about God’s plans prevailing even when we make mistakes and miss God’s best?
7. In Romans 1:25, we read that those without God worship and serve “the creature rather than the Creator.” Pastor Paul said to “Seek the Giver, not the gift.” Why do people tend to seek the temporal creation for security and safety rather than the eternal Creator God? What do you depend on more than God?
8. Genesis 13:4b says that Abram “called upon the name of the Lord.” In Genesis we see that phrase two other times (Gen. 4:26 & Gen. 12:8). Why is it significant to “call upon the name of the Lord”?
9.What do you need to “call upon the name of the Lord” about this week? Or said another way, how can our group pray for you this week?
