RE:BUILD STRONG

Why RE:BUILD? There is going to be a whole lot of rebuilding required!

We are called to be people who build:
Build one another up (1 Thes 5:11)
Build up cities (Prov 11:11)

I believe that people who follow Jesus are called to build strong, and build selflessly into a bigger story.

My grievance with contemporary society is with its decrepitude...I stake the future on the few humble and hearty lovers who seek God passionately in the marvelous, messy world of redeemed and related activities that lie in front of our noses.” William McNamara (The Human Adventure)

What if that was you and I?

“RE” is a preposition, in other words, the matter at hand is to BUILD. So this is not just rebuilding something that was, but also building the new for what is to come. Today we are going to talk about building STRONG, and next week, building SELFLESSLY

I enjoy building things; I thought I would have tonnes of time during lockdown to be able to build things! But I’ve only built a chicken run. In 51 days!

What have you built/made/created during lockdown?

Some basics that are helpful to build:
B - Base
U - Unity
I - Intentionality
L - Leadership
D - Design

We are builders, makers, creators. Since the start of time. We build for
-Function (schools, houses, roads),
-Fun (hobbies, stadiums, playground),
-Fame (statues, social media follows, empires)

God is the original creator, builder, maker, we have that in us

Now every house is built by someone, but the one who built everything is God. Hebrews 3:4 (CSB)

There are tonnes of stories in the Bible about people building things. Here’re some examples,

ARK (NOAH) Gen 6:14-15 (CSB)“Make yourself an ark of gopher wood. Make rooms in the ark, and cover it with pitch inside and outside. 15 This is how you are to make it:

TABERNACLE (MOSES) Exodus 25:8-9 (CSB) “They are to make a sanctuary for me so that I may dwell among them. 9 You must make it according to all that I show you—the pattern of the tabernacle as well as the pattern of all its furnishings.

TEMPLE (SOLOMON) 1 Kings 5:5; 1 Chronicles 28:19 (CSB)
And so I intend to build a house for the name of the LORD my God, as the LORD said to David my father, 9 “All this he made clear to me in writing from the hand of the LORD, all the work to be done according to the plan.”

TOWER OF BABEL Genesis 11: 4 (CSB) And they said, “Come, let’s build ourselves a city and a tower with its top in the sky. Let’s make a name for ourselves;

GOLDEN CALF Exodus 32:1 (CSB) “Come, make gods for us who will go before us because this Moses, the man who brought us up from the land of Egypt—we don’t know what has happened to him!”

HAMAN'S GALLOWS Esther 5:14 (CSB)14 His wife Zeresh and all his friends told him, “Have them build a gallows seventy-five feet tall. Ask the king in the morning to hang Mordecai on it.

Note
-The first three are “GOD’S WILL BE DONE” the last three are “MY WILL BE DONE”
-When we build upon the word of God, it always unfolds into a bigger story
-God gives the plans, the details, the strategy, the materials. What God requires, He provides
-When we build upon our own selfish motivations, it usually ends badly. Babel ends in confusion an unfinished project, The Golden Calf, ends up being ground up into gold dust and drank. Haman got hanged on his own gallows

What are you building on, and what are you building for? Are you building for function, fun, fame? Or are you building in faith - God not my will but yours be done?

The Spirit of the Lord GOD is on me, because the LORD has anointed me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives and freedom to the prisoners; 2 to proclaim the year of the LORD’s favor, and the day of our God’s vengeance; to comfort all who mourn, 3 to provide for those who mourn in Zion; to give them a crown of beauty instead of ashes, festive oil instead of mourning, and splendid clothes instead of despair. And they will be called righteous trees, planted by the LORD to glorify him. 4 They will rebuild the ancient ruins; they will restore the former devastations; they will renew the ruined cities, the devastations of many generations. Isa 61:1:4 (CSB)

The Gospel story is beautiful: the BROKEN become BUILDERS - righteous trees that REBUILD and bring glory to God.

Let's make sure ‘our own oxygen masks are on first!

Sometimes we are so quick to pour into others because we are trying to fill a hole in our own foundations.

Let’s RE:BUILD strong in our own lives. Here’s how Jesus said it:

24 “Therefore, everyone who hears these words of mine and acts on them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25 The rain fell, the rivers rose, and the winds blew and pounded that house. Yet it didn’t collapse, because its foundation was on the rock. 26 But everyone who hears these words of mine and doesn’t act on them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. 27 The rain fell, the rivers rose, the winds blew and pounded that house, and it collapsed. It collapsed with a great crash.” Matt 7:24-27 (CSB)

This is a very practical metaphor for life

1/ BUILD STRONG TO STAND IN THE STORM

Rain, river, wind. The Storms of life WILL come and they will reveal how we have built The cracks, the leaks and the shortcuts. The unseen: the houses may look the same from the outside but what's underneath is hidden In lockdown, there is nowhere to go, tension builds. This are revealed in: relationships, parenting, emotions, anxiety, attachments to things, generational things come out insecurities flare escapism of choice become clear.

2/ BUILD STRONG ON JESUS

He is The Cornerstone, The King of Kings, The founder and perfecter of our faith Our Hope, confidence, stability, The Saviour Teacher. We have to get full of Jesus. Stay Close. Hear, listen, trust, obey.

3/ BUILD STRONG BY OBEDIENCE

Step 1: hearing what Jesus teaches. Luke 6 says he DUG DEEP to find the foundation

Don’t build on inspiration, or perspiration, but on revelation - Paul de Jong

Step 2: let his words become your ways But be doers of the word and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. James 1:22 CSB

Don’t stop at 1! Many people just hear the teachings and never apply them, storms come, things fall apart.

“Knowledge must become action; theory must become practice; theology must become life”. William Barclay

That requires TIME, TRUST, HUMILITY, PROXIMITY

-Seek first the kingdom of God
-Do to others what you would have them do to you
-Abide to produce fruit
-Come to him weary and burdened to find rest
-Love one another

This is a season of imposed challenges but introspection opportunities

Don’t miss what God may be wanting to do in the present because it wasn’t on your plan. Stop asking why is all this happening, and rather ask what is possible?

What has been revealed to you / in you in this time? Maybe feels like everything has fallen apart, the house has fallen with a great CRASH.

Make sure temp fixes don't become permanent features - deal with the root

Is this not the time to RE:BUILD, on the rock, to build strong?

God sees you through eyes of grace. So much love. He is for you!

God gives details and direction on what he would have us build. There were so many details in the ARK, tabernacle, temple. I was asking why, and I felt that

God is particular about the details because he’s particular about the purpose

Jesus words give us the details of how we build lives that withstand the storms of life and serve a particular purpose that he has prepared for us!

We can go from being poor, broken, to trees of righteousness that BUILD.

Where ever you are today, God offers you a new beginning:

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has passed away, and see, the new has come! 2 Cor 5:17 (CSB)

“Come, let’s settle this,” says the Lord. “Though your sins are scarlet, they will be as white as snow; though they are crimson red, they will be like wool. Isa 1:18 (CSB)

New beginning is good but a series of next steps is great - keep moving forward! A long obedience in the same direction.

In Ezra: The prophets spoke, God moves hearts, the (re) building began.

This is a time where the prophets begin to speak, the Spirit stirs our hearts and we begin to build!

Base - on Jesus
Unity - Together as one
Intentionality - keep moving forward
Leadership - God’s will
Design - God’s details
