Week3 here UNWAVERING THE COURAGE OF YOUR CONVICTIONS
Psalms 16:7-8 (CSB) 7 I will bless the LORD who counsels me — even at night when my thoughts trouble me.8 I always let the LORD guide me. Because he is at my right hand, I will not be shaken.
The Danger or Drift
Heb 2:1 (CSB) 1 For this reason, we must pay attention all the more to what we have heard, so that we will not drift away.
There are many "currents" that relentlessly try to pull us away
Jesus: Teachings that transcend times and trials, relevant then, and now!
Hebrews was written to people going through a hard time. Encouraging them to
- Focus on Jesus
- Live in a new way
- Imitate Christ
- Persevere in faith
Heb 10:19-25 (CSB) 19 Therefore, brothers and sisters, since we have boldness to enter the sanctuary through the blood of Jesus 20 he has inaugurated for us a new and living way through the curtain (that is, through his flesh) 21 and since we have a great high priest over the house of God 22 let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed in pure water. 23 Let us hold on to the confession of our hope without wavering, since he who promised is faithful.24 And let us consider one another in order to provoke love and good works 25 not neglecting to gather together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging each other, and all the more as you see the day approaching.
10:19-21 Jesus perfect sacrifice makes it possible to come into the presence of God and live in a new way. He has cleared the way!
10:22-25: There are 5 privileges for the new way of life Jesus has opened for us
Draw Near: GET CLOSE
Hold on: GET A GRIP
Consider One Another: GET THINKING
Gather Together: GET CONNECTED
Encourage Each Other: GET A WORD TO GIVE
The first two are to do with our personal walk with God, the next three are worked out in community
1/ GET CLOSE
Headmaster's office or going home?
2/ GET A GRIP
(on our confession of hope)
Hold on to a parachute, and it holds on to you!
Ref: Jn 10:28
3/ GET THINKING
(discover creative ways to encourage love and good deeds in others)
Constraint is the forge of creativity
Ref: Jn 13:35
Start at home. Set an example that is worth imitating.
4/ GET CONNECTED
Be part of the story, don't sit on the side lines.
A complete collection!
The point of gathering as the church is not to be entertained but to be engaged together in bringing glory to God and carrying out a mission that is impacting the world
5/ GET A WORD TO GIVE
Our words can build up / breakdown.
"Encouragement releases energy, lifts the spirits, and makes the impossible seem possible" Bob Buford
Ref: Prov 11:11 Matt 12:34
Mask on / mask off.
5 questions to ask yourself :
1/ GET CLOSE: Is there anything holding me back from getting closer to God? Shame? Anger? No relationship? Distraction? Fear?
2/ GET A GRIP: What am I holding on to?
3/ GET THINKING: What creative ideas do I have to encourage love and good deeds?
4/ GET CONNECTED: Am I on the sidelines or part of the story?
5/ GET A WORD TO GIVE: Are my words building up or breaking down?
What do you need to do to correct the drift?
Heb 10:18 (CSB) 18 Now where there is forgiveness of these, there is no longer an offering for sin.
Heb 10:26 (CSB) 26 For if we deliberately go on sinning after receiving the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins
