Choosing Joy
When the angel appeared to the shepherds, his message was unmistakable: “I bring you good tidings of great joy which will be to all people.” Not just to some people. Not just to those having a good day. To all people. Joy to the world means joy for everyone, everywhere, every day.
Yet is that really possible? Joy in this world? Many of us struggle with this. We’ve had tough weeks, difficult years, and deeply painful seasons. We might think it’s impossible to be joyful in the face of the hard things we’re experiencing.
Here’s the key distinction: joy is not the same as happiness. Happiness depends on circumstances. If things are going well, we’re happy. Yet joy is different. It’s not dependent on circumstances, it’s dependent on our connection with God.
Joy is supernatural. It’s an overflow of a life divinely connected to the Holy Spirit. That’s why Paul could write from prison, “Rejoice in the Lord always.” That’s why the early Christians could sing in jail cells. Their joy wasn’t based on their situation, it was rooted in their Savior.
The shepherds show us how to access this joy. First, they heard the Good News. The angel said a Savior had been born! Good news brings joy. When we remember what Jesus has done for us—forgiven our sins, given us new life, promised us eternity—joy bubbles up.
Second, they responded in obedience. Luke 2:15 says they went immediately to see Jesus. Joy continues when we do what God says. When we trust Him and obey, even when it’s hard, we experience His joy.
Third, they shared it with others. Luke 2:17 says, “Now when they had seen Him, they made widely known the saying which was told them concerning this Child.” Joy multiplies when we tell someone else what God has done. There’s an indescribable burst of joy when you share Jesus with others.
You have a choice today. You could choose to be discouraged… You could choose to be angry or cynical... Yet because of what Jesus has done, you can also choose joy. It’s a choice to focus on Him rather than your circumstances. It’s a choice to trust rather than worry.
Choose joy today. Not because everything is perfect, but because Jesus is perfect and He’s always with you.
Pray
Lord, I choose joy today. Not fake happiness that ignores reality, but supernatural joy that comes from knowing You. Remind me of the Good News. Give me opportunities to share You with others. Fill me with Your joy. Amen.
