Key Verse: Come close to God, and God will come close to you. - James 4:8a

Luke 5 opens with the crowd pressing in close to Jesus and listening to His words (Luke 5:1). For some, they probably had to put aside some of their daily tasks and busy schedules to press in to hear Jesus. For others, being in a crowd must have been hot and physically demanding. Despite the discomfort, they chose to remain close to Jesus.

As the people in the crowd hung around Jesus, they began to witness miracles such as the miraculous haul of fish (Luke 5:6). Others experienced transformations, healings and miracles in their own lives. Some of these people in the crowd would later go on to become His disciples and leaders in the New Testament Church.

The effects of being around Jesus and listening to His words were unmistakably clear - they produced powerful and permanent changes in lives!

Let this be our posture of our hearts at the beginning of this year - to hunger to be in His presence, whatever the cost. As we get close to Him to listen to His words, we can expect to receive greater faith, fresh perspectives and an overflow of His joy, peace and purpose.

However, drawing near to God may necessitate the re-ordering of our priorities and schedules. It may mean putting aside some of our pet hobbies and regular activities and getting into spaces where we worship, listen to His word and spend time praying and seeking His presence.

Fresh adventures of faith, callings and greater miracles await us as we get close to God. As we draw near to Him, He will draw near to us (James 4:8).

Response

Let’s choose to respond to God’s invitation for us to go deeper with Him. Let’s hunger for more of His presence and to hear His word. In prayer, express your desire to go deeper with God and to be all in for these 21 days.
