Proverbs 11:16-21 - Compare All Versions

Proverbs 11:16-21 NIV (New International Version)

A kindhearted woman gains honor, but ruthless men gain only wealth. Those who are kind benefit themselves, but the cruel bring ruin on themselves. A wicked person earns deceptive wages, but the one who sows righteousness reaps a sure reward. Truly the righteous attain life, but whoever pursues evil finds death. The LORD detests those whose hearts are perverse, but he delights in those whose ways are blameless. Be sure of this: The wicked will not go unpunished, but those who are righteous will go free.

Proverbs 11:16-21 ESV (English Standard Version 2025)

A gracious woman gets honor, and violent men get riches. A man who is kind benefits himself, but a cruel man hurts himself. The wicked earns deceptive wages, but one who sows righteousness gets a sure reward. Whoever is steadfast in righteousness will live, but he who pursues evil will die. Those of crooked heart are an abomination to the LORD, but those of blameless ways are his delight. Be assured, an evil person will not go unpunished, but the offspring of the righteous will be delivered.

Proverbs 11:16-21 NLT (New Living Translation)

A gracious woman gains respect, but ruthless men gain only wealth. Your kindness will reward you, but your cruelty will destroy you. Evil people get rich for the moment, but the reward of the godly will last. Godly people find life; evil people find death. The LORD detests people with crooked hearts, but he delights in those with integrity. Evil people will surely be punished, but the children of the godly will go free.

Proverbs 11:16-21 CSB (Christian Standard Bible)

A gracious woman gains honor, but violent  people gain only riches. A kind man benefits himself,  but a cruel person brings ruin on himself.  The wicked person earns an empty wage, but the one who sows righteousness, a true reward.  Genuine righteousness leads to life,  but pursuing evil leads to death.  Those with twisted minds are detestable to the  LORD, but those with blameless conduct are his delight.  Be assured  that a wicked person will not go unpunished,  but the offspring of the righteous will escape.

Proverbs 11:16-21 KJV (King James Version)

A gracious woman retaineth honour: And strong men retain riches. The merciful man doeth good to his own soul: But he that is cruel troubleth his own flesh. The wicked worketh a deceitful work: But to him that soweth righteousness shall be a sure reward. As righteousness tendeth to life: So he that pursueth evil pursueth it to his own death. They that are of a froward heart are abomination to the LORD: But such as are upright in their way are his delight. Though hand join in hand, the wicked shall not be unpunished: But the seed of the righteous shall be delivered.

Proverbs 11:16-21 NKJV (New King James Version)

A gracious woman retains honor, But ruthless men retain riches. The merciful man does good for his own soul, But he who is cruel troubles his own flesh. The wicked man does deceptive work, But he who sows righteousness will have a sure reward. As righteousness leads to life, So he who pursues evil pursues it to his own death. Those who are of a perverse heart are an abomination to the LORD, But the blameless in their ways are His delight. Though they join forces, the wicked will not go unpunished; But the posterity of the righteous will be delivered.

Proverbs 11:16-21 MSG (The Message)

A woman of gentle grace gets respect, but men of rough violence grab for loot. When you’re kind to others, you help yourself; when you’re cruel to others, you hurt yourself. Bad work gets paid with a bad check; good work gets solid pay. Take your stand with God’s loyal community and live, or chase after phantoms of evil and die. GOD can’t stand deceivers, but oh how he relishes integrity. Count on this: The wicked won’t get off scot-free, and God’s loyal people will triumph.

Proverbs 11:16-21 NASB2020 (New American Standard Bible - NASB)

A gracious woman attains honor, And ruthless men attain riches. A merciful person does himself good, But the cruel person does himself harm. A wicked person earns deceptive wages, But one who sows righteousness gets a true reward. One who is steadfast in righteousness attains life, But one who pursues evil attains his own death. The perverse in heart are an abomination to the LORD, But the blameless in their walk are His delight. Be assured, the evil person will not go unpunished, But the descendants of the righteous will be rescued.

Proverbs 11:16-21 AMP (Amplified Bible)

A gracious and good woman attains honor, And ruthless men attain riches [but not respect]. The merciful and generous man benefits his soul [for his behavior returns to bless him], But the cruel and callous man does himself harm. The wicked man earns deceptive wages, But he who sows righteousness and lives his life with integrity will have a true reward [that is both permanent and satisfying]. [Hos 10:12; Gal 6:8, 9; James 3:18] He who is steadfast in righteousness attains life, But he who pursues evil attains his own death. The perverse in heart are repulsive and shamefully vile to the LORD, But those who are blameless and above reproach in their walk are His delight! Assuredly, the evil man will not go unpunished, But the descendants of the righteous will be freed.

Proverbs 11:16-21 NET (New English Translation)

A generous woman gains honor, and ruthless men seize wealth. A kind person benefits himself, but a cruel person brings himself trouble. The wicked person earns deceitful wages, but the one who sows righteousness reaps a genuine reward. True righteousness leads to life, but the one who pursues evil pursues it to his own death. The LORD abhors those who are perverse in heart, but those who are blameless in their ways are his delight. Be assured that the evil person will certainly be punished, but the descendants of the righteous will not suffer unjust judgment.
