Amos 5:10-15 The Message (MSG)
People hate this kind of talk. Raw truth is never popular. But here it is, bluntly spoken: Because you run roughshod over the poor and take the bread right out of their mouths, You’re never going to move into the luxury homes you have built. You’re never going to drink wine from the expensive vineyards you’ve planted. I know precisely the extent of your violations, the enormity of your sins. Appalling! You bully right-living people, taking bribes right and left and kicking the poor when they’re down. Justice is a lost cause. Evil is epidemic. Decent people throw up their hands. Protest and rebuke are useless, a waste of breath. Seek good and not evil— and live! You talk about GOD, the God-of-the-Angel-Armies, being your best friend. Well, live like it, and maybe it will happen. Hate evil and love good, then work it out in the public square. Maybe GOD, the God-of-the-Angel-Armies, will notice your remnant and be gracious.

They hate him that rebuketh in the gate, and they abhor him that speaketh uprightly. Forasmuch therefore as your treading is upon the poor, and ye take from him burdens of wheat: ye have built houses of hewn stone, but ye shall not dwell in them; ye have planted pleasant vineyards, but ye shall not drink wine of them. For I know your manifold transgressions and your mighty sins: they afflict the just, they take a bribe, and they turn aside the poor in the gate from their right. Therefore the prudent shall keep silence in that time; for it is an evil time. Seek good, and not evil, that ye may live: and so the LORD, the God of hosts, shall be with you, as ye have spoken. They hate the one who challenges injustice and despise the one who declares the whole truth in court. For I know how outrageous are your many sins and how many crimes you have committed. You persecute the righteous, trample on the rights of the poor, and seize their grain through extortion. By taking bribes, you prevent them from getting justice in the courts. This is why you will not live in the fine stone houses you build or enjoy the fruits of your luxury. You will not drink wine from the lush vineyards you plant, for your judgment is imminent. Yes, the smartest thing for the prudent is to remain silent in such an evil time as this. Devote yourself to what is good, not evil, so that you may live. And YAHWEH, the God of Angel Armies, will really be with you, just as you claim he is. Hate what is evil, love what is right, and let justice prevail in the courts. It may be that YAHWEH, God of Angel Armies, will show mercy to the remnant of Israel.
