Sabaot (spy) Kenya
Sabaot is spoken by a population of 279,000+in Kenya, East Africa. The people live in Western Province, Mt. Elgon District as well as in Rift Valley Province, Trans-Nzoia District on or near the slopes of Mount Elgon. The people are pastoralists, with both cattle and agriculture. Sabaot is also known as “Mt. Elgon Maasai”, and Sebei. Dialects of Sabaot include Bong’omeek (Bong’om, Pong’om), Koony (Kony), and Book (Bok, Pok). It is related to Kupsabiny [kpz] of Uganda. Sabaot is classified as Nilo-Saharan, Eastern Sudanic, Nilotic, Southern, Kalenjin, Elgon, and is a member of the macrolanguage Kalenjin [kln] (Kenya). Sabaot is regarded positively within the speaker community, widely used by all ages - at home, for social gatherings and religion. Speakers also use Lubukusu, Kiswahili [swh], or English. The literacy rate in Sabaot is over 30%; in a second language, 50%. It is taught in primary schools. Written materials include the Bible. The writing system uses Latin script. The Sabaot community is experiencing language revitalization. There were tensions between different ethnic groups in the 2007–2008 Kenyan post-election crisis.
