You Never Know
"And it came to pass, when all the kings of the Amorites, which were on the side of Jordan... and all the kings of the Canaanites, which were by the sea .... heard that the Lord had dried up the waters of the Jordan from before the children of Israel...that their heart melted, neither was there spirit in them...."
Their hearts melted! They were afraid! But the nation of Israel didn't know that! God moves in ways that we don't always see and definitely don't always understand. Faith is trusting in God even when we don't see or understand. The nation of Israel crossed the Jordan and God did it in such as way that it created fear in the hearts of the people who lived there. Wow!
Lets move that to the North America and take an imaginary trip! The defense being it is surrounded primarily from invaders by water. Imagine our three countries (Canada, USA, Mexico) in the position of the Amorites, & the Canaanites if we heard of nation conquering Europe, and then the ocean opened up for them to cross. Not sure about anyone else, but I would without a doubt just give up.
They might not have understood who God is, but they did understand the power that comes from controlling the river. That would be a fear worth listening to. The point is that when the nation of Israel did not and could not know about the fears of the people they set out to conquer. When God told them he would go before them, I doubt this is what they expected. With God you never know how he will resolve a situation you just have to trust that he can and will.
