DAY 55 OF 181

A Father’s Dilemma Read Leviticus 10:1-20 You must distinguish between the holy and the common, between the unclean and the clean, and you must teach the Israelites all the decrees the LORD has given them through Moses. Leviticus 10:10-11 A prisoner escaped from police custody when he was being brought to court. He then went home to see his wife who had just given birth. The next day his father surrendered him to the police. It was not easy for the old man, but he had to do the right thing. Today’s text is one of the saddest passages in the Bible. The ordination of Aaron and his four sons as priests was just over. Then the two eldest sons were killed by the very fire that brought awe and joy earlier. What is this ‘unauthorized fire’? Could it be fire from another source or was it bringing an offering not at the prescribed time? The point is they were indifferent to the Lord’s commands when they were supposed to teach them to the people. This demonstration of the severity of God started at the very beginning of the worship in the Tent of Meeting. God wanted to establish firmly that His holiness could not be compromised. The people had to know how to differentiate between the things which are acceptable to Him and that which were not. The same thing happened in the life of the early church when Ananias and Sapphira were struck dead as they lied to God (Acts 5:1-11). Aaron, as a father, accepted the judgment of God silently (v 3). The hardest part was not being allowed to mourn the sons’ death. But God showed compassion when He allowed the community to mourn. He also acknowledged Aaron’s emotional upsets (vs 19-20) when he refused to eat the sin offering. Our God is both the God of love and judgment. Why do we seldom speak about the severity of God? Pray that we do not abuse the love God has for us.
