Fear Busters for Singles

DAY 1 OF 6

Day 1: Kill The Panic Button

As I neared my 40th birthday, I remember pulling up into my driveway from a long day at work. As I sat in my car that night, it dawned on me that I was turning forty in a few months, and that scared me. I thought I would have been married with kids in my twenties. But here I was single as ever and battling a health challenge that could have a bearing on my fertility. How did I get here? As that question echoed through the silence of that dark night, I saw no end in sight, and panic wrapped itself around my heart, choking the little hope I had. Where was God in all of this? I felt like He had let me down when I had trusted Him, but it now seemed like it had all been in vain.

A couple of days later, God sent a good friend of mine to encourage me, and his simple words rang true: “Kill The Panic Button!” Nothing good comes from operating out of fear and panic. You end up producing works of the flesh, as Sarah did in the book of Genesis. When Sarah’s promise of a child had taken too long, she took matters into her own hands and came up with a disastrous plan to have her maid sleep with her husband to get a child. Her plan backfired and brought her more grief than relief. It’s easy to sit and judge Sarah when we are high on the mountain of faith and youth, but our faith gets tested in the valleys over time. It’s in those lonely valleys that we need people who can encourage us and speak truth that helps us to keep our eyes on God, not our circumstances. Remember, God is faithful and trustworthy, and He always fulfils His promises to us. So steady your heart and trust God with your journey because He knows where you are and where He is taking you. Allow God to lead you and refuse to be led by fear and anxiety in this season. Kill the panic button!

In this devotional, we dismantle the different fears by turning our focus towards God’s love and faithfulness towards us.
