DAY 1 OF 33

Day 1: The Cross

Who is Jesus Christ to you?

John chapter 3 begins with the story of Nicodemus, who came to Jesus at night seeking truth. Though he was well-versed in the Law and religious life, he understood Jesus only as a teacher sent from God (John 3:2). In response, Jesus reveals His true identity, saying, “For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16).

Jesus is the Son of God who came out of love for us and chose the cross to give us eternal life.

From the world’s perspective, the cross looks like failure. Yet Paul declares, “The message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God” (1 Corinthians 1:18). God accomplished salvation not through human wisdom or strength, but through humility and love displayed on the cross.

The path of the cross may seem narrow, but it leads to life. Being nailed to the cross appears like death, but it results in eternal life. Just as a seed must fall to the ground and die to bear fruit, the cross of Jesus Christ is the power that brings eternal life.

Our faith often resembles Nicodemus’. We may know many things, yet still wonder where true life begins. But when we look to the cross at the place of our limits, failures, and brokenness, we begin to understand. Jesus is not merely a teacher or a great figure—He is God’s love given for us. And we are called to live in the likeness of that love. The cross is not a symbol of suffering alone, but an invitation into love, restoration, and eternal life.

| Reflection Questions

1. When you meditate on the cross, who is Jesus Christ to you?
2. How should you live as you follow the Jesus revealed through the cross?

About this Plan

Solus Christus : Bible Reading Community

This 33-day devotional plan is a community journey designed to help us fix our eyes on Christ alone through the Word, following the life of Jesus Christ—from His birth and public ministry to the cross, the resurrection, and His return. Each day includes about three Scripture passages, a short meditation, and questions that lead from personal reflection to shared application in community, inviting us to know Christ, become more like Him, and live as witnesses to Him. *Special thanks to Sophia
