Love, Loss, and Legacy: Finding God in the Story of Ruth and Naomi, a 5-Day Devotional by Michele C. Walker, Ph.D.

DAY 1 OF 5

Love That Stays

If you’ve ever faced deep loss or watched someone you love walk through it, you know that grief can make the world feel small and cold. After Naomi’s husband and two sons died (Ruth 1:3–5), she urged her daughters-in-law to return to their own families (Ruth 1:11–13). She believed she had nothing left to offer.

Researchers have found that in seasons of bereavement, especially later in life, anxiety about the future can lead some people to pull away from others. Sometimes, it’s to conserve energy that they’ll need to cope with the loss; other times, it’s a defense against more hurt. Yet this withdrawal can also shrink our lifeline of emotional, spiritual, and physical support—just when we need it most.

Ruth’s response to Naomi’s attempts to push her away is inspiring: “Where you go I will go, and where you stay I will stay. Your people will be my people, and your God my God” (Ruth 1:16). She chose to be present, to show love and care at a critical time in Naomi’s life.

Ruth’s devotion wasn’t just about companionship—it was about restoring hope, rebuilding trust, and helping Naomi sense her value again. Ruth embodied Proverbs 17:17: “A friend loves at all times, and a brother/ sister is born for a time of adversity.”

Grief—or any hardship—can make us feel unworthy of love and care. But God designed us to need one another, especially when we’re hurting. Sometimes, love’s greatest act is simply staying, showing up, holding space for someone’s pain, and being an instrument of hope. That’s the beauty of sisterhood in Christ. We can choose to connect when others step back.

Let’s Reflect:

  • When life gets hard, do I let people in, or do I shrink away?
  • Have I ever pushed a friend away when I needed them the most?
  • How can I bring life, hope, and God’s love into someone’s difficult season today?

Prayer
Lord, thank You for the gift of friendship that holds us up when our hearts are heavy. Help me to notice the ones who are quietly hurting, and give me the courage to draw close instead of stepping back. Teach me to be a friend who stays, who loves at all times, and who points others back to You. When I am the one in need, soften my heart to receive the care and kindness of others. Let our sisterhood be a place where Your love is seen and felt.
In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
