Genesis: God's Plan Cannot Be Hindered (Genesis 36-50)

DAY 1 OF 8

What Is God Doing While We Suffer?

Genesis 36 may feel like simple genealogy, yet it prepares us for a deeper truth about God’s work in suffering. Esau’s family expands, gains wealth, and produces kings while Jacob’s family seems small, unsettled, and deeply dysfunctional. If you judged by appearances alone, you might think God was blessing the wrong people. Yet behind the scenes, God is setting things in motion for a much greater story. What looks insignificant to us is often the soil in which God plants His purposes.

Genesis 37 shows this pattern more clearly. Joseph is seventeen, favored by his father, and despised by his brothers. His dreams hint at a future he does not understand, but they also hint at God’s hidden work. Joseph’s suffering does not come from foolish choices. It comes from the sin of others.

Still, God is present in every detail. A stranger finds Joseph wandering and redirects him. His brothers spot him from a distance. A caravan arrives at the precise moment he sits in the pit. None of this is random. God is preparing a path forward even though Joseph feels lost and confused. What Joseph experiences as chaos is actually the careful hand of God guiding his steps.

The betrayal that follows is devastating. Joseph is stripped of his robe, thrown into a pit, and sold to traders for twenty pieces of silver. Joseph cries out in fear. Jacob breaks in grief. Reuben panics in regret. Everyone sees disaster. Yet Scripture ends the chapter with a small but powerful reminder that God is orchestrating our salvation.

Joseph is taken to Egypt and placed in the house of an officer of Pharaoh. The very moment that feels like the end of Joseph’s life is actually the beginning of the rescue God will bring through him. God uses the free decisions of sinful people to position Joseph exactly where he needs to be so that many lives will be saved.

This is how God often works in our suffering. He is not passive. He is not indifferent. He is not distant. He is setting things in motion long before we recognize them. He is preparing a path forward even when we feel like we are wandering. He is orchestrating our salvation in ways we would never choose but desperately need. What confuses us today may become the very thing God uses to provide for us tomorrow.

Joseph’s story invites us to trust that God’s work continues even when we cannot see it. You may feel overlooked, stuck, or forgotten. Yet God may already be arranging the circumstances that will one day reveal His goodness and His faithfulness.

At the cross, God proved this once and for all, because the darkest moment in history became the means of our redemption. If God worked through that suffering for our salvation, we can trust Him to work through ours as well.

Reflection Question: Where do you feel most confused by God’s silence or inaction, and how does Joseph’s story help you trust that God may be setting things in motion even now?

Prayer: Father, when I cannot see what you are doing, help me trust that you are still working. Jesus, thank you for entering suffering to secure my salvation. Holy Spirit, strengthen my heart to believe that you are preparing a path forward even when I feel lost. Amen.
