Three Years in 30 Days: Jesus' Life and MissionSample

Unexpected growth
“With what can we compare the kingdom of God, or what parable shall we use for it? It is like a grain of mustard seed, which, when sown on the ground, is the smallest of all the seeds on earth…” (Mark 4:30-31 ESV)
The following parables are about the growth of the kingdom of God.
Jesus uses a mustard seed as an example. In the land of Israel, this was already a well-known spice at that time. It was used to give dishes a spicy flavor. This small seed grows into a large bush in which birds can make nests.
The kingdom of God resembles a mustard plant. At first, it is almost invisible. It is small and unremarkable. But despite its small beginnings, the kingdom of God grows into a countless multitude.
Just as all kinds of birds find rest in the shelter of the branches, people from all nations come to faith in the Lord Jesus.
We can also be encouraged by this parable. When someone comes to faith in Jesus, this is sometimes hardly visible. But faith takes root in the heart. Then growth follows, and eventually fruit is produced.
