FAMILY GOALS: I AM CONNECTED Are you a chatterbox family? When you get together, does the emotional level rocket up? Do you all talk at the same time, interrupt each other, and just delight in what's going on in each other's lives? If so, you probably drive your in-laws crazy. But even if you aren't huge talkers, you have probably figured out by now that families need communication. Talking to each other is oxygen for your family ties. Mom loves your calls. Dad appreciates the respect you show by consulting him. Grandma's loneliness is more bearable if she can hear your voice every now and then. And all those people even more intensely need you to listen to them. Their burdens are less heavy if they think that somebody cares about them. James figured out that the path to the heart leads through the ears, not the tongue. He said, "Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak" (James 1:19). How are you doing? Hmm . . . tell me about it. I've got time . . .
