WIVES AND MOTHERS: GOOD WIVES RESPECT THEIR HUSBANDS God commanded husbands to love their wives, which is a woman's greatest need. But he didn't tell wives to love their husbands. Not that that's unimportant--men like to be loved. But they absolutely must have respect. There can't be a healthy marriage when a man does not feel respected in his own home. An "Oprah" episode a while back featured a panel of married women. They poured out stories of how, when they get together with other women, the conversation is dominated by complaining about their husbands. Hmm. Is that your experience too? Women may have less physical strength, but their tongues can cut a man's self-respect to shreds and make him feel useless and small. How's the emotional climate in your home? Could it be better? You might be surprised to find out that God has some ideas on this subject. He says in Ephesians 5:33, "Each one of you [husbands] also must love his wife . . . and the wife must respect her husband." Now, on the assumption that God might actually be talking to you, how can you use your words today to build up the man in your life?
