DAY 305 OF 365

Do Something New! Singing a new song is difficult for a lot of people. It's new, it's different, and it takes some effort and investment to learn it. "Why can't we just sing the ones we already know?" I even heard a guest speaker at a worship conference proclaim: "If I come to your church, don't make me sing songs I don't know. I only want to sing songs that I already know." Consider all of the anointed and amazing worship songs that wouldn't have been written if we had listened to and abided by that teacher's admonition more than ten years ago. By singing new songs, we allow worship to stay fresh and interesting. It challenges the worshipper to engage their mind along with their spirit. To not sing new songs puts worship at risk of becoming routine, predictable, and detached. Now keep in mind, Psalm 33:3 doesn't say, "Sing to Him only new songs," but rather, don't despise the old for the new. It could just as well say not to despise the new for the old. There's great value in the songs of old that have stood the test of time, especially when they're sung alongside songs that are new and fresh. I find the same to be true in my own personal life and relationships. I so value the wisdom of those who have walked with the Lord for many, many years, yet I also find inspiration in the passion and zeal of believers of the next generation. My heart as a worship leader is to honor the great traditional hymns while introducing new songs that are filled with the same wonder and awe-but with a new melody, a new beat, and a new perspective. If you continue to learn new things, including new songs, you'll never really get old, nor will your worship! Singing a new song is difficult for a lot of people. If you continue to learn new things, including new songs, you'll never really get old, nor will your worship! Think about it... What does this passage reveal to me about God? What does this passage reveal to me about myself? Based on this, what changes do I need to make? What is my prayer for today?
