Calvary Chapel Fort Lauderdale Daily Devotional

DAY 192 OF 365

Look to His covenantWhen you pull back and look at it from a bird's eye view, Psalm 74 is an expression of frustration. From the psalmist's perspective, it seems like the enemies of God are able to run free and unchecked against His people. The Lord's justice appears to be absent, and it sparks a real frustration that can very easily turn into an accusation that He doesn't really care. And yet, it is in the midst of this understandable sense of frustration that the Psalmist points to and appeals to the covenant that was forged between the Lord and His people. A covenant is a solemn agreement between two parties, and in this case the covenant God initiated and established with Abraham and his descendants is what we have in view. God had promised that He would be their faithful protector and provider as they walked in His ways. So the presence of this covenant is like a metal spike holding a mountain-climber in place as he dangerously dangles over a precarious place. The realty of the covenant holds the Psalmist secure and anchors him to something greater than himself, regardless of what his surrounding circumstances seem to be suggesting. God is there and does care, because the covenant tells him so. When all seems lost, it is the covenant that God initiated with us that we must point to and appeal to. That covenant was sealed on the cross as Jesus died for our sin, and it stands firm and unchangeable. It means God is for us, even when our feelings and circumstances seem to suggest otherwise. The next time you're frustrated or find yourself questioning God, look to His covenant with you. Look to the Cross. Keeper of our eternal covenant, please help us focus on Your great faithfulness demonstrated on the Cross, and not on our surrounding circumstances. When you pull back and look at it from a bird's eye view, Psalm 74 is an expression of frustration. From the psalmist's perspective...Think about it... What does this passage reveal to me about God? What does this passage reveal to me about myself? Based on this, what changes do I need to make? What is my prayer for today?
