DAY 156 OF 365

El-gibbor We've already looked at the divine name El-Shaddai, which is translated for us as "God Almighty." But now we're going to turn our attention to another name that's similar, Mighty God. Although these two names sound the same, there's actually a shade of difference that gives us deeper insight into who God is. In the original Hebrew, the words for "Almighty" and "Mighty" are different. One is Shaddai, the other gibbor. So in English, Mighty God, is the Hebrew name El-gibbor. Now, stay with me here, because this is really powerful. The word gibbor is very specific in it's meaning, which is "heroic." It's not just might in the sense of great strength, but also as One who rises up and dramatically defeats the bad guys. (Imagine the soundtrack rising to a crescendo in the background.) That's something that resonates in all of us. We'll pay good money to watch it depicted for us on the big screen. Remember the thrill you felt when you first saw Rocky get up against all odds and go the distance? Think back to when Eric Liddell lifted his head high and took the gold medal in a race he wasn't supposed to win at the end of Chariots of Fire. Or think about how you felt as you witnessed the bravery and gallantry of Maximus in Gladiator. These are our heroes. These are the characters we all wish we could portray in real life. But as powerful as they are, they're nothing compared to our heroic God, El-gibbor. Our Mighty God always rises up at just the right time to do the right thing. Don't lose that sense of child-like wonder and thrill when it comes to your Mighty God. May His Spirit give each and every one of us a fresh sense of just how heroic He is. The word gibbor is very specific in it's meaning, which is "heroic." It's not just might in the sense of great strength, but also as One who rises up and dramatically defeats the bad guys.Think about it... What does this passage reveal to me about God? What does this passage reveal to me about myself? Based on this, what changes do I need to make? What is my prayer for today?
