Calvary Chapel Fort Lauderdale Daily Devotional

DAY 138 OF 365

One (once again) God is diverse. His nature consists of three separate and distinct persons. And yet, we also have to make the point that He is still one God. The Father, Son, and Spirit aren't three separate gods, nor is each person one-third God. They are three yet one, and we employ the term Trinity (meaning three yet one) to capture this concept. So while God's nature is defined by diversity, it's also defined by unity...and so is marriage. When a man and woman are brought together in marriage, they aren't two independent individuals that happen to co-exist under the same roof...they're one. We've already discovered what it means for a husband and wife to be one; it means they decide to let go of their individual ways of life, their old sense of independence, and their own prerogatives. (See May 8 and 9.) But when we look at this issue through the lens of God's nature, we see that He sets our standard for unity through His very own one-ness. When He calls men and women to live in purposeful unity and solidarity, He's calling them to follow an example expressed through His very existence. Unity is an undeniable attribute of God, and it's also an essential attribute of a godly marriage. A husband and wife being "one" is a real-life way for them to reflect God to those around them. But the reverse is equally true: When a married couple clings to their past, hangs onto their independence, and pushes their own prerogatives, they're actually misrepresenting God to a watching world. If there was ever a time for Christian couples to shine, it's now! And the only way they can truly shine is by being one, just as the Lord is one. A husband and wife being "one" is a real-life way for them to reflect God to those around them. Think about it... What does this passage reveal to me about God? What does this passage reveal to me about myself? Based on this, what changes do I need to make? What is my prayer for today?
