Calvary Chapel Fort Lauderdale Daily Devotional

DAY 128 OF 365

1 + 1 = 1 Think back to a time when you've repeated yourself to someone about something. Was it a reminder to your co-worker to pick up a shift for you? "Remember, you're covering for me this weekend." Was it something you said to your spouse? "Don't forget, I need you to swing past the store sometime today." Or was it directed toward a friend? "Just so we're clear, you'll have my ticket once I get to the game. Right?" All of us repeat important words to others, but why do we do it? Two reasons. First, we know we're dealing with human beings who are imperfect and prone to forget things. We understand this because we've all done it ourselves. Second, there's something important at stake. It's important that our shift gets covered, that we get the groceries we need, and that we're not left ticketless. The same is happening here as Jesus basically repeats Himself. Keep in mind He had just told His audience that a man needs to let go of his old independent life as he embarks on a new existence in marriage. But as if to say, "Remember...don't forget...just so we're clear," He underscores the fact that "they are no longer two." Why? Because He knows us. He knows we're imperfect and prone to forget things. And because He knows there's something extremely important at stake, it's absolutely critical for us to "get this" in order to do marriage God's way. We can't look at marriage as two individuals co-existing together. We have to see it as a man and woman determining to leave their own independence behind in order to create a new union. Marriage isn't a matter of 1 + 1 = 2, it's 1 + 1 = 1. We simply can't miss this, and this is evidenced by the Lord repeating it for us. We can't look at marriage as two individuals co-existing together. Think about it... What does this passage reveal to me about God? What does this passage reveal to me about myself? Based on this, what changes do I need to make? What is my prayer for today?
