MEN DEVOTED Secret service men tensed at the sound of the shots. By instinct, one slammed himself against the body of Vice-President Johnson, knocking him to the floor of the limousine. His body covered that of the Vice-President, protecting him from the assassin's bullets. If only there had been warning, perhaps President Kennedy could have been saved like this. These secret service men are dedicated to give their lives for their leader. Our reading today speaks of such dedicated men who put their lives at risk for their leader. David knew the feeling of being surrounded by devoted men. Not only did they protect him, but when he mentioned he wished a drink from Bethlehem's well, they risked their lives to get that water. They were indeed devoted men. Our hearts stir when we think of such selfless sacrifice. However, there is One Who gave far more. Christ died--not just for a leader, and important man, or even a good man--but Christ died for all. He died for the lowly and the lofty. This is the miracle of His sacrifice; He loved the world and gave Himself for it. Greater love has no man. The Scripture rightly records: For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life (John 3:16).
