Draw Near – 365 Guides to Greater Intimacy with God

DAY 222 OF 365

WHAT DID JESUS LOOK LIKE? No picture or statue of Christ, from His own time, exists. The Jewish religion did not permit the making of any graven images, and a physical description of Him is not given in Scripture. However, there are four vivid word pictures of Christ that tell much about our Lord and the Father. These are known as The Gospels and have rightly been called the most important books ever written. The word Gospel is not found in the Old Testament. The word comes from two sources: the Greek and Anglo-Saxon. In the Greek, the word means "good news" whereas the Anglo-Saxon word is "god-spell" or a good mystery spelled out by God to man. Both meanings epitomize what the story of Christ is. Many ask, "Why are there four Gospels?" The answer is that there are four different views of the Living Christ in them. Matthew writes for the Hebrews, seeing Christ as their "Messiah-King." Mark writes to the Romans, telling about the "Conquering Servant." Luke turns to the Greeks, showing Christ as the "Son of Man," while John pictures the Lord for Christians as the "Son of God and Savior." All four Gospels are needed for a full-dimensional picture of Christ. What a dark and dreary world we would have if there were no "Gospels." How different our lives would be if we had not been touched by the mystery and majesty of the Living Lord. Every man who has come in vital contact with the Christ finds the greatest treasure man can know. God's mystery of salvation has been revealed in His Son and His "good news" has gone out to the whole world. Let us share it everyday with everyone about us.
