AWAY FROM THE MADDING CROWD Most of the men who have changed history were not born in a reigning class, members of some guild, or part of an institution. Rather, they were unique personalities with a burning zeal for their particular mission. This was true also of the Old Testament prophets. The position of the prophet in ancient times was held in great honor among the Jews, Arabs, and Greeks. Often their influence was greater than that of the king, and the rulers sought their blessings on their plans. Yet, these men were loners, called by God away from the madding crowd to bring a burning message of repentance. Following the four "Major Prophets" in the Bible come the twelve "Minor Prophets." These men were called from all walks of life and driven by the Spirit to call men back to God. Some were of royal lineage, some were priests, and others earned their living in ordinary ways. Many had attended the special "school of prophets" started by Samuel; but others, like Amos, had no formal theological training. Because they were "free agents" called by God, they preached not what people wanted to hear but what God wanted the people to hear. Probably the first of the Minor Prophets was Jonah and the last, Malachi. Each can best be described as men of whom the world was not worthy. They preached faithfully and prayed fervently. Their influence was great because of their holy lives and unselfish devotion. Miracles augmented their ministries, and their words pricked the people's consciences. What they prophesied came true. We can learn much from their writings about the throbbing love of God and of our individual responsibilities to His Kingdom. May God call us as He did them to a great work, the results of which will last into eternity.
