Abiding in the Psalms

DAY 43 OF 63

We become what we worship. This psalm and the psalm before go hand in hand. Psalm 111 is filled with worship and adoration of our good and faithful God. Psalm 112 shows us that when we worship our good God and stand in awe at who He is, we become more like Him. Who are you worshipping? We know who we are worshipping because we become what we worship. Are you becoming more like Jesus every day? Or are you becoming more like the #fitspo instagrammer whose feed you check multiple times a day? Or are you becoming more like the bloke at the gym who’s lifting heavier each time you see him? Are you becoming more like what the world wants you to become? Or more like who God wants you to become? The people in this psalm, the ones “who fear God” (verse 1), are becoming more like God. Timothy Keller explains this well in his book My Rock, My Refuge : “God is compassionate (Psalm 111:4), and so they are generous (Psalm 112:4-5). God’s word endures (111:8) and so those who fear him are steadfast even when news is bad (112:7). God is righteous (111:3) and so are they (111:3)”. We want to become more and more like those of this world, because often that is where our focus lies. We want to be accepted and valued by people, so we run after what they run after. Yet, in God is the only way to find true acceptance and true value, as God loved us so much that He left His Heavenly throne and DIED in our place. At our worst, God sacrificed His son to pay for our sin. THAT is true acceptance, THAT is what it means to be valued. Questions What/who do you worship? Why? What does God offer that these other things do not? How does this change what you are running after now? Pray Heavenly Father, you are “gracious and compassionate” (111:4), you take care of me and desire to know me. The Creator of the universe, the Saviour of my soul wants to know me. I am sorry for …… Help me to know you more and more, and through that help me to become more and more like You. Amen.
