Mark 10:42-45Jesus called them over and said to them, “You know that those who are regarded as rulers of the Gentiles dominate them, and their men of high positions exercise power over them. But it must not be like that among you. On the contrary, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first among you must be a slave to all. For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life — a ransom for many.”
Jesus encourages the disciples not to be prideful as those of the world are especially when it concerns having great power and authority. Jesus had the absolute right to exercise authority over everyone and everything, but He chose not to so that He could come to the earth to save mankind. He freely gave up the grandeur of heaven to become and man, not just any man, but one who died nailed to a cross (Phil 2:6-8).
If Jesus did this freely and without hesitation, who am I to consider myself great in any way. How could I take pride in any position I could possibly have in this world knowing that it would be far below the position Christ left to ransom me. No matter the position I attained I would know that it had to be by GOD's hand and for His glory not mine.
LORD GOD of all power and glory there is none like You. Your majesty fills heaven and earth. Please forgive me when I pridefully look at any position I am in and think even for a moment that I am great because of it. Please teach me humility so that You can get all the glory. I cannot do this on my own so I surrender to You. Please teach me how to be a true servant knowing that all I do must point people back You and Your glory. Thank You for all You have done, all You are doing and all You will do in me. All glory be Yours forever in the name of Jesus amen.
