@allanwhite blasphemeth against the holy ghost?
10 and whosoever shall speak a word against the son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but unto him that blasphemeth against the holy ghost it shall not be forgiven.
i was wondering that myself when i saw your note. i thought, well the pharisees said that jesus was blasphemous by preaching as one with authority. like he was god.
so i thought maybe it's for those who speak in tongues, like the pentecostals (not all of them i'm sure) who might "speak in tongues" because everyone else is, but they're not actually moved by the holy spirit. they may be doing it to fit in.
i had always understood "speaking in tongues" as in the tower of babel tongues. different languages. it was said in acts chapter 2. on the day of the pentecost, the people preaching were filled with the holy ghost and began speaking in other tongues, as the spirit gave them utterance.
the people in the audience were jews from every nation under heaven. they all let the word out what was happening and multitudes of people showed up, they were all confounded because each man heard them speak in their own language. they were not speaking gibberish. the people in the audience heard and understood what was being said.
it must have been the bilingual people that pointed it out. like someone who spoke english and spanish but english was their primary language, heard the sermon in english and said in spanish to his spanish friend, "man i wish you spoke english so you could hear what this guys is saying, it's so true!" and spanish guy says, "i can hear him, he's not speaking english, he's speaking spanish!" then they figured what was actually going down. the holy ghost.
there are some rules laid out for the use of speaking in tongues. in 1 corinthians 14.
i don't know for sure what blasphemeth against the holy ghost means but it is a warning from god not to do it.
AFTER THINKING OVER NITE
i've decided that i should have looked up the word first.
from the merriam-webster dictionary website:
"1 a : the act of insulting or showing contempt or lack of reverence for God
b : the act of claiming the attributes of deity
2 : irreverence toward something considered sacred or inviolable "
now saying you are filled with the holy ghost and speaking in tongues when you are not filled with the holy ghost could be 1a or 1b
i did not discuss things like, saying the holy ghost does not exist, or like he's not important. the holy ghost tells god things that we should but are unable to because we don't know what we ought to pray for. (which i believe our prayers should be filled with thanksgivings and praises in word and song)
romans 8:26 likewise the spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.
1 in 3 and 3 in 1. from the beginning there were 3 in 1 and 1 in 3.
genesis 1:26a and god said, let us make man in our image, after our likeness:
here is a link to the britannica.com section on blasphemy (religion)
"In christianity, blasphemy has points in common with heresy but is differentiated from it in that heresy consists of holding a belief contrary to the orthodox one. Thus, it is not blasphemous to deny the existence of god or to question the established tenets of the christian faith unless this is done in a mocking and derisive spirit. "
mocking the holy spirit. like i said i believe that it's possible that not all the pentacosts are actually speaking in tongues led by the holy spirit. now if i had done it mockingly like tried to make some of the "gibberish" sounds i have heard from the few pentecostal churches i went to then i may have been mocking the holy ghost.
i certainly hope calling it "gibberish" isn't mocking. i didn't mean it mocking. like i described above i always thought of "tongues" as in actual languages not "gibberish". also in my defense i would like to say i never saw a person translating the prayers the people in the pentecostal church (i had been to 2 different ones and experienced the same types of things at both). which is one thing that should have been. but i am supposed to remove the beam out of my eye before i try to remove the toothpick out of my brother's eye.
i guess what i'm saying is that i do not completely understand it myself. but i do like trying to explain it. either way i hope this helps someone.
