For Love is of God
From John to You-
Entire letter is about love.
God wants his family to be a loving family. High standard of loving each other as Christ loved us. Greatest is love. Put on loving kindness, above all put on love. Gods family is to put love at the top of the list, it can't be overemphasized. Everything else hangs on love.
Love. Righteousness. Truth.- All are related to knowledge. All have to be working together with one another. (ie: speaking truth without love is repulsive)
Who wrote this book? Apostle John.
Letter from a man who's best friend was Peter, him and his brothers nicknamed Sons of Thunder, only one who stood at the foot of the cross with Jesus family, first one to run and see the tomb found empty; outlived all the other apostles, never lost faith, boldly proclaimed Gods love and how it should convict us
Why did he write this letter?
1) 1:4- That your joy may be full
-Christians should be filled with joy bc in the midst of persecution we know who are God is and are at peace knowing we have a home in heaven
2) 2:1-That you may not sin
-Lord forgives us and gives us a place to walk with him; living in light as saints (sanctified and pulled out of the world)
3) 5:13- That you may know that you have eternal life (those who believe)
-Blessed assurance; Gods promise will save us and he wants us to know that
But how do you know you know?
In the midst of a world that had continual change and education, Gods word is ABSOLUTE and never changes
1:6-7 -Test of Obedience
-Are we practicing sin or truth?
4:7-11-Test of Love
-let us love one another; he who does not love does not know God; love one another bc God loved us
2:18,22,29 - Test of Doctrine
-Antichrist: someone who denies the father and son; know that He is righteous and everyone who practices righteousness is born of Him
Does your life reflect the love of God?
