Romans 1 8 - 17
Do Christians need to hear the gospel? The bible is all about the gospel. From beginning to end. It needs to be the real gospel not a distortion.
We need to keep hearing the gospel to get on with other Christians and it helps us go out into the world.
Romans is quite a doctrinal book. He probably wrote it with the church in Rome in mind. He wanted to talk to them about being missionaries. He also wanted to deal with the disharmony in the church. There was tension in the church. It was preoccupied with it's internal disputes never mind mobilising people to go out with the gospel.
Verse 15 tells us Paul was eager to preach the gospel to the church in Rome. The Christians. The gospel is what we need to hear. The gospel is more than ticking boxes.
1/. The gospel is God's power to rescue those who will believe.
We tend to shy away from telling others we are Christians but here in verse 16 we are told we have nothing to be ashamed about. People today may look at us as narrow mined and bigoted but ultimately we will not be put to shame. We will be shown to be right. God saves us from judgement.
Those who have rejected Him will ultimately be rejected. We need to be reminded not only what God has done or what He is doing but what He will do. The gospel needs to be shared all around the world but it needs to be shared here in our own wee town. The gospel is the power of God saving everyone who believes. Not everyone who hears. Everyone who believes. Just because everyone doesn't believe doesn't mean it's not true. People's refusal to believe in hell doesn't mean it's not there. Even if our family and friends reject it, it is still our responsibility to proclaim it. We all need rescued. We need to trust the one who has rescued us
2/. The gospel reveals our reliance on God's righteousness.
God always does what is right. He needs to punish sin. The wonderful plan of salvation was for God to punish His perfect Son for our sins. He would then give us His righteousness. We would attain Jesus' perfectness.
To obtain this salvation we need to have faith. Simple faith. A belief that obeys. We obey Him by accepting the truth. We have nothing to offer God. We can't buy salvation. We can't work for salvation. We need His grace and mercy.
We are nothing. We are useless. God has brought His rescue. We don't have to be good enough. The finished work is done at Calvary.
It is great to be reminded of the gospel. It is great to see what God has done for us. But what about you. Are you a Christian. Have you trusted Him as your saviour.
